WM New Zealand is looking for an Infrastructure Engineer to help keep the IT backbone strong for a business that matters. The role sits onsite in Auckland and covers a broad mix of Microsoft, cloud, network and infrastructure work to make sure systems stay reliable, secure and available. WM New Zealand operates within Waste Management, a team focused on solving real problems, from roads and recycling to reporting, and aims to support communities and protect whenua. If you enjoy hands-on work with a supportive team, this could be a good fit.

The position is based onsite in Auckland, with responsibilities spanning Microsoft 365, Azure, cloud and server environments, plus network infrastructure. You’ll provide Level 2 infrastructure support, troubleshoot issues, and escalate when needed, while monitoring performance and responding to alerts or outages. You’ll also manage patching, upgrades and lifecycle activities, contribute to technology projects on the Digital Solutions roadmap, and maintain documentation and Disaster Recovery plans. Disaster Recovery testing and business continuity readiness are part of the role, and you’ll work with vendors and technology partners to resolve problems and drive improvements, all while ensuring compliance with cyber security standards.

If this sounds like a hands-on, collaborative role where you can influence resilience and efficiency across critical systems, you’ll likely enjoy working at WM New Zealand and contributing to the wider mission of protecting communities and supporting the whenua.

Keeping the IT backbone steady

The day-to-day mix includes keeping Microsoft 365, Azure, cloud and on-premises server environments healthy, while offering Level 2 support for infrastructure issues and coordinating with vendors when issues rise to higher levels. There’s a strong emphasis on monitoring infrastructure health, addressing faults and service disruptions promptly, and keeping patching and maintenance cycles current. You’ll help steer technology projects within the Digital Solutions portfolio and ensure that documentation and DR procedures stay up to date, including testing that keeps business continuity ready for any scenario.

Disaster recovery planning sits at the heart of the role, with testing and validation embedded in the cycle, so you’ll routinely demonstrate and refine recovery capabilities. You’ll collaborate with technology partners to resolve complex issues, deliver improvements, and ensure that infrastructure services stay aligned with Waste Management’s cyber security standards and best practices. You’ll also look for opportunities to make the environment more resilient, automate repetitive tasks where possible, and push for performance and efficiency gains across the estate.

Tips for making your case

Lead your resume with concrete examples of IT project work where you used structured delivery approaches and ITIL processes alongside ServiceNow or similar ITSM tools. Show how you’ve helped stabilize and improve infrastructure in real-world settings, especially around Microsoft 365, Azure, Windows Server and networking with Cisco/Meraki.

Provide a crisp story about a past patching cycle, a major outage you managed or a DR test you ran, and the tangible outcomes you achieved in terms of resilience or faster recovery. Demonstrate your comfort with vendor engagement and cross-team collaboration to drive improvements across the estate.

Be ready to talk through a scenario where you balanced cloud and on-premises elements within an enterprise, including how you prioritised security controls and kept documentation up to date. Prepare to share a concrete example of how you automated a routine task or monitoring alert to save time or reduce risk.

Ask a focused question about the roadmap: How does WM New Zealand balance cloud and on-prem infrastructure within the Digital Solutions framework while staying aligned to cyber security standards? A good question shows you’ve thought about where automation, resilience and security intersect in their environment.
