Company Description

Ferrovial Construction Canada Inc. and VINCI Construction Grands Projets are undertaking the design, build, and finance of the Ontario Line Southern Civil, Stations, and Tunnel (South Civil) package.

As Ontario Transit Group, we are now mobilizing our design and construction crews, with major works. The South Civil contract is anticipated to be completed in 2030.

The project will strengthen Ontario’s economy by supporting an estimated 1,500 jobs at the peak of construction.

What is the project?

  • A six-kilometer tunnel and associated tunnelling works from Exhibition to Don Yard portal (west of the Don River).
  • Stations:
    • One above-ground station to be integrated with the existing GO Transit Exhibition Station.
    • Two underground stations to be integrated with the existing TTC Osgoode and Queen subway stations.
    • Four new underground stations (King/Bathurst, Queen/Spadina, Moss Park, Corktown). 

Job Description

The Lead Quality Inspector, Tunnel is critical to ensuring that all tunneling operations meet the highest standards of quality and comply with project specifications, safety guidelines, and regulatory requirements. This role will play a key part in monitoring, documenting, and enforcing quality controls, working closely with the Quality and Construction teams to maintain stringent standards throughout the tunnel construction process.

The salary range for this position is $100,000 CAD- $135,000 CAD, plus additional benefits.

Key Responsibilities:

Inspection and Quality Assurance

  • Conduct daily inspections of tunneling activities, ensuring that all work adheres to the approved construction quality standards, project specifications, and Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs).
  • Oversee quality control of all tunneling-related operations, including excavation, lining installation, support systems, and other related activities.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Maintain detailed and accurate inspection records, including non-conformance reports (NCRs), daily logs, and inspection checklists.
  • Ensure that all required documentation is properly completed, signed off, and uploaded into the document management system (e.g., SharePoint, Autodesk Construction Cloud).

Non-Conformance Management

  • Identify, document, and report any deviations or non-conformances from project specifications or quality standards.
  • Work with the Quality Manager and relevant departments to develop corrective actions and monitor the closeout of NCRs within the required timelines.

Team Coordination

  • Lead and mentor Tunnel Quality Inspectors, providing guidance on best practices and quality standards to maintain a cohesive quality control team.
  • Coordinate with Construction Managers, Tunnel Engineers, and other site personnel to ensure efficient and safe tunnel operations while meeting quality requirements.

Testing and Sampling

  • Coordinate with third-party testing agencies and internal teams for on-site testing and sampling of tunnel materials, including concrete, shotcrete, and grout.
  • Ensure that all materials meet the project’s output specifications before and during installation.

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure that all inspections are conducted safely, adhering to OTG’s safety policies and procedures, and report any safety issues observed during quality inspections.
  • Collaborate with the safety team to ensure that tunneling activities are performed in compliance with regulatory and safety standards.

Quality Audits and Reporting

  • Participate in regular quality audits of tunneling activities to identify areas for improvement and ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Prepare and submit weekly quality reports to the Construction Quality Manager, detailing quality activities, observations, and any areas of concern.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in quality inspection within tunneling or heavy civil construction projects, with a strong preference for transit or rail infrastructure.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Certification as a quality professional (e.g., ISO 9001:2015 Lead Auditor or relevant construction quality certification) is an asset.
  • In-depth knowledge of tunnel construction processes and materials, including methods like Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) or Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) operations.
  • Familiarity with Ontario Provincial Standards Specifications (OPSS), American Concrete Institute (ACI) standards, and other relevant codes.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) and document management software such as SharePoint, Autodesk Construction Cloud, BIM360, or Procore.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for effective reporting and collaboration.
  • Ability to work in confined underground environments and in rotating shifts, including nights and weekends if required.
  • Comfortable standing, walking, and performing inspections for extended periods in a tunnel environment.
