We give customers direct access to the real-time wholesale electricity price as it varies every 5 mins and the technology to shift more of their energy usage to the times when cheaper renewables are available in the grid. It’s a cheaper way to buy power, a smarter way to sell power, and the fastest way for Australia to reach 100% renewable energy. We are a clear category leader in Australia for home battery automation and are growing rapidly (over 70k customers). We have also recently expanded into licensing our core technology to utilities overseas, including a partnership with E.ON Next in the UK.Amber is backed by top Australian and international investors including Square Peg, Main Sequence, Breakthrough Victoria, Commonwealth Bank, NRMA, Gentrack, ETF Partners (UK/Europe based), and E.ON Next.We are scaling rapidly and you’d be joining a team of close to 200 committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and purpose-driven culture as we transform a major industry. Our products are reshaping home energy: Amber for Batteries cuts bills by exporting stored energy at wholesale prices of up to $19/kWh, and Amber for EVs enables the cheapest, cleanest charging. In 2026, we will push this even further with our new vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology.💻 About the RoleAs Legal Counsel, you will be a commercial "force multiplier" within the business. You won’t just be identifying risks, you will be a strategic partner to key teams including Product, Operations, Marketing, and Business Development, helping them navigate unchartered territory in global SaaS licensing, V2G technology, and complex energy regulations.
Your focus for 2026 could include:
- Global Expansion: Hard-wiring our legal and commercial frameworks as we license Amber’s core technology across the UK, EU, and beyond.
- Strategic Growth: Supporting future funding rounds, and high-impact commercial partnerships.
- Product Innovation: Providing the scaffolding for major reform and regulatory changes, including 2026 V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) rollout and wholesale market integration.
👉🏽 Responsibilities
- Strategic Commercial Partnering: Draft, negotiate, and manage a broad suite of commercial contracts, from international SaaS licensing agreements to complex third-party vendor partnerships.
- Product & Tech Counsel: Work alongside Product and Marketing to roll-out initiatives like V2G and Amber for EVs, ensuring compliance with consumer protection, data privacy, and security standards.
- Regulatory Navigation: Engage with regulators and support our Regulatory & Compliance teams in shaping (and operationalizing) the rules for a flexible, two-way energy grid.
- Corporate & Commercial: Assist in driving key growth projects, fundraising and supporting the legal requirements of our international corporate structure.
- Internal Capability Building: Create "self-service" legal tools, playbooks, and training to up-skill the wider Amber team and drive legal team efficiency.
- External Counsel Management: Strategically brief and manage specialist external counsel when required.
🎯 Key Requirements
- Experience: 4–5 years PQE with a strong background in Commercial & Corporate Law, M&A, or Technology/SaaS.
- The "Scale-up" Mindset: You are approachable, supportive, and comfortable with ambiguity. You see legal advice as a tool to achieve goals, not block them.
- Energy Knowledge (“a plus”): Prior experience in the energy regulatory framework is an advantage, but a passion for the sector and a fast-learning appetite is essential.
- Communication: You can translate "legalese" into plain English for non-legal stakeholders and provide practical, risk-weighted advice.
