Performs skilled and semi-skilled mechanical and plumbing installation, maintenance, repair, and testing work across hospital facilities. Ensures safe, efficient, and reliable operation of plumbing systems, plant services, and related physical assets in support of uninterrupted clinical and non-clinical services, while complying with hospital safety, quality, and accreditation standards.

  • Responds promptly to plumbing and mechanical faults and emergencies to ensure patient safety and continuity of hospital operations.
  • Installs, repairs, maintains, and tests plumbing systems, pipes, valves, fittings, drainage systems, fixtures, and associated plant services equipment.
  • Ensures all mechanical and plumbing works comply with hospital safety policies, infection control requirements, and applicable codes of practice.
  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance activities to maintain system reliability, efficiency, and service quality.
  • Diagnoses mechanical and plumbing system failures, identifies root causes, and carries out appropriate corrective actions.
  • Implements approved maintenance work orders, organises assigned resources effectively, and manages time to meet service timelines.
  • Inspects assigned areas regularly and reports system deficiencies, risks, or required repairs to the Maintenance Supervisor or Engineer.
  • Identifies material, spare part, and tool requirements and advises the Team Leader/Engineer of critical items to prevent service disruption.
  • Coordinates with other facilities trades, including electrical, civil, HVAC, and IT teams, to support integrated maintenance activities.
  • Completes all work control documents, reports, logs, and related paperwork accurately and on time.
  • Maintains tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe, clean, and organised condition.
  • Demonstrates cross-trade competency and supports a wide range of facilities maintenance activities as required.
  • Recommends improvements, efficiency enhancements, or system upgrades to improve operational performance and reliability.
  • Implements and promotes sustainable practices and environmentally responsible methods in Facilities Management operations.
  • Maintains confidentiality in all activities to safeguard hospital operations and sensitive information.
  • Industrial Training Certificate in Mechanical, Plumbing, or a related trade; or
  • Diploma in Mechanical, Plumbing, or Building Services Engineering

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a healthcare organisation’s maintenance department or similar institution.
  • Knowledge of plumbing and mechanical systems used in hospitals or similar institutional facilities.
  • Knowledge of applicable mechanical codes of practice, standards, and engineering principles.
  • Knowledge of preventive and corrective maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA) standards related to facilities and environment of care preferred.
  • Skills in installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of plumbing and mechanical systems.
  • Skills in using hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment safely and effectively.
  • Skills in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Skills in basic computer applications for work orders, reporting, and documentation.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Ability to respond effectively to emergencies and urgent maintenance requirements.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary facilities team.
  • Ability to manage assigned tasks, priorities, and deadlines in a healthcare environment.
  • Ability to read and write English.
