Advice for applicants

Lead with your most relevant qualification and experience on your CV. Put the NZ Certificate in Infrastructure Works (Pipeline Construction and Maintenance with Drinking Water Strand) Level 4 (or its equivalent) right up front, along with your 1-2 years’ experience in water maintenance and any reticulation work you’ve tackled.

Show how you’ve demonstrated the must-haves in real work. Cite concrete examples of fault inspections, planning responses and carrying out repairs, and mention your on-call or standby experience as well as your teamwork and independent work ability. If you’ve driven manual vehicles, highlight the relevant licence in your application.

Prepare for the interview by thinking through safety-focused scenarios, how you handle equipment and tools, and how you’ve contributed to water quality in past roles. Be ready to discuss your approach to working in both a team and autonomous setting, and share a practical example of a time you resolved a difficult fault or completed a planned maintenance task.

Ask a smart question that shows you’re thinking about the role’s realities. For instance: how does the Thames–Coromandel team coordinate on-call duties, and what training opportunities exist to deepen skills in backflow prevention or flushing operations?
