Tetra Pak is seeking a Project Engineer - Powder Handling to join its onsite team in Hamilton, New Zealand. This is a full-time role based in Hamilton, with the hands-on setup you’d expect for managing powder handling projects on site and supporting offshore work when needed.

The company aims to protect what’s good, food, people and the planet, while making food safe and accessible everywhere. It’s a mission that invites engineers who want to see real impact in their work and contribute to a global, sustainable effort.

If you enjoy turning concept designs into practical, client-ready solutions and you’re energized by drafting, design, and field deployment, this could be a great match for you.

From concept to commissioning in powder handling

In this role you’ll take process responsibility within the order-to-design workflow to deliver process design specifications and practical solutions, while offering support across functions like sales, issue resolution, PLC and PC work. You’ll focus on drafting and design, coordinating implementation and guiding commissioning efforts, all while collaborating closely with clients to refine concepts and keep budget estimates on track.

You’ll produce detailed mechanical designs for milk powder projects, including P&IDs, fabrication planning, layout work and 2D/3D drawings, and you’ll also prepare as-built drawings and the technical documentation that supports installation and handover. With a large portion of projects run offshore, you’ll have hands-on involvement in installation, commissioning and validation, and there will be opportunities to travel so your designs come to life in real environments.

Your must-have toolkit

The team is looking for a blend of essential capabilities and useful extras. Below is a consolidated list reworded from the role’s requirements.

  • Deep experience designing powder food processing systems
  • Solid knowledge of process equipment and machinery design
  • Proven ability to write functional specifications
  • Ability to size flow elements such as pumps, blowers, valves and pneumatic transport lines
  • Experience managing project costs using SAP
  • Strong technical and installation know-how
  • Autonomous work style with solid project management capabilities
  • Hands-on experience implementing projects
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Project, AutoCAD 2D/3D and Inventor
  • Solid grasp of process technology standards
  • Three to five years of engineering experience
  • A mechanical or process engineering degree, or NZCE diploma

Pay, benefits and practical details

The role offers market-competitive pay and benefits with flexible working arrangements. It is a full-time, onsite position based in Hamilton, NZ, with the chance to work on a globally oriented portfolio of projects.

A significant portion of projects are offshore, so you’ll be involved in installation, commissioning and validation on site and may travel to see your designs become reality. This is a role that rewards hands-on problem solving and practical delivery across the project lifecycle.

Tips to help you stand out

Lead the resume with powder handling projects where you designed and laid out processing lines, and be ready to walk through the associated drawings and specs you produced. You should highlight how you translated concept designs into mechanical drawings and how you handled the documentation that supported installation and commissioning.

Demonstrate how you sized flow elements and managed costs for a real project, including any use of SAP for cost tracking. Concrete examples will help show you can balance technical requirements with budget realities.

Be prepared to discuss offshore work and travel; share a specific project where you traveled or worked remotely to see a design through to installation, commissioning or validation.

Have a portfolio ready that includes P&IDs, 2D/3D drawings and any Inventor or AutoCAD work, along with examples of functional specifications you’ve written and the technical documents you produced for handover.
