On-site
Fort McMurray, CA
$128,000 CAD yearly

Komatsu, a global leader supplying technologies and services for construction, mining, forklift, industrial and forestry markets, is hiring a Quality Control Technician II for its on-site team in Fort McMurray, CA. The role is hands-on and field-focused, with a 7x7, 12-hour shift rotation that alternates days and nights and adds travel up to 25% within Canada and the USA. If you’re a certified welding inspector who enjoys working closely with operations to improve safety, reliability and customer satisfaction, this could be a good fit. The position reports to the Manager of Reliability and Quality.

Komatsu operates in more than 140 countries and employs over 64,000 people. For more than a century the company has been delivering value through manufacturing and technological innovation, with a commitment to supporting communities through training and development and a goal of a more sustainable future. At Komatsu Canada, diversity, inclusion and a positive employee experience are part of the culture, with benefits and opportunities that reflect the scale of the organization.

This is an onsite opportunity that suits someone who likes a practical, collaborative role in a mining setting and wants to contribute to quality programs on real-world equipment and projects.

Day-to-day work in the field

The core of the job centers on welding, fabrication and nondestructive testing inspections to ensure alignment with company, customer and industry standards, while you review drawings and specifications to verify quality requirements are met. When issues arise, you’ll trace the root causes and help implement corrective actions to minimize rework, and you’ll document findings in inspection reports and maintain quality records. You’ll coordinate activities such as weld traceability, welder qualification management and ensuring compliance with CWB standards, while supporting customer audits and scope reviews with strong service. In production meetings you’ll share updates on quality performance and opportunities for improvement, and you’ll help foster a safe, constructive work environment by mentoring teammates on quality best practices.

Must-have and nice-to-haves for this role

To be considered, these are the qualifications and credentials you’ll need to bring:

  • A current CWB Welding Inspector certification
  • A CGSB MT certification that is current; other NDT certifications such as PT, UT or XRF are assets
  • Hands-on experience performing welding and NDT inspections in mining, industrial or heavy equipment settings
  • A solid grasp of welding codes, quality standards and inspection processes
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and prepare detailed inspection reports
  • Strong communication skills for collaboration with customers and internal teams
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with SAP is an asset
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license and no restrictions to access mine sites

Nice-to-haves that can help you stand out include familiarity with additional NDT methods beyond MT (PT, UT, XRF) and experience coordinating traceability and welder qualification programs in similar environments.

Pay, benefits and practical details

The role offers a base pay of $64.26 per hour, with the full compensation package discussed during the initial pre-screen. The annual minimum listed is 128,000 CAD. Komatsu provides a comprehensive benefits package that includes health and dental, vision, life insurance and short- and long-term disability, plus a health care and personal wellness spending account. A company-sponsored registered pension plan with matching is available, along with a safety boot voucher, paid vacation and company-supplied tools. The company carries a Glassdoor rating of 4/5 and supports sustainable employment and opportunities to work with advanced technology and equipment.

Other practical details: the position is safety-sensitive and requires drug and alcohol testing, physical-demand fitness testing, an RCMP criminal record check and submission of a five-year provincial driving record. Travel is up to 25% within Canada and the USA, relocation is not offered, and the job is onsite in Fort McMurray with additional allowances tied to location.

Advice for applicants

Lead your resume with your CWB Welding Inspector certification and CGSB MT certification, and call out your mining or heavy equipment NDT experience up top so the panel sees your fit right away.

When you describe your experience, illustrate how you’ve reduced rework by identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions, ideally with numbers or concrete outcomes from past projects.

Be ready to discuss how you interpret engineering drawings and translate them into precise inspection reports, and bring examples that show how you maintained traceability and ensured CWB compliance on real jobs.

Ask a targeted question about how weld traceability, welder qualifications and CWB compliance are managed on Komatsu sites, and how travel requirements are scheduled given the 7x7 rotation and 25% travel ceiling.
