NZSki is seeking a seasoned Head of Roads and Transport for Mt Hutt, a full-time winter role May to October, leading about 18 staff across bus drivers, road crew and car parking. You will manage day-to-day operations to keep access roads and car parks safe and fully functional, recruit and develop your team, update SOPs and hazard registers, and partner with the Mt Hutt management team on policies and performance. A rare opportunity has become available to join the Mt Hutt team as our Head of Roads and Transport for the 2026 season and beyond.
Reporting to our Ski Area Manager, you will be leading a team of approximately 18 including bus drivers, road crew, and car parking crew, in a fast-paced environment that presents a diverse range of challenges.
Our Roads & Transport Head of Department is responsible for day-to-day operations of the department, with a focus on ensuring our access road and car parks are safe and fully operational for our guests.
Leading from the front, your role is to inspire and motivate staff members to deliver exceptional guest experiences and ensure they receive opportunities to further develop their skills and experience. The successful applicant will successfully demonstrate their capacity to thrive in an alpine environment, prior experience of driving busses and operating machinery in an winter conditions, and the ability to lead a culturally diverse team.
This is a full-time, fixed-term, winter seasonal employment contract commencing early May and ending mid/end-October.
About the Role

• From the outset you will be responsible for the recruitment and training of your team, with a focus on setting them up for success by ensuring expectations are clearly communicated early on.
• You’ll also review our summer development programme and business plan, updating standard operating procedures, training manuals and hazard registers to ensure our documentation aligns to best practice. You will also be involved in regular meetings with the Mt Hutt management team to ensure policies, procedures, and practices (such as payroll, purchasing, reward & recognition and performance management and cross-utilisation) are well understood and consistently applied.
• Day-to-day, the roles across the department are varied, and you’ll be leading and motivating the team, ensuring they have the skills, knowledge, and equipment to be able perform their duties effectively– we want our teams to feel a sense of pride and job satisfaction.
• Managing our snow clearing and chain fitting contractors’ forms part of this role, and you’ll need to build relationships to help manage the day-to-day operational requirements that fall under this umbrella.
• Safety is key, and your team will need to have the knowledge and confidence to report hazards, speak up and ask questions as needed.
• Throughout the season you’ll oversee daily operations, set work rosters to ensure the department is adequately resourced for forecast weather conditions and visitation expectations, all whilst actively working alongside your team to ensure they are delivering a consistently safe and engaging service.
• Our Roads and Transport team are crucial to the overall success of our ski area operations and it’s vital the team are prepared every day to welcome guests as they will often be the first point of contact.
• A key challenge of this role will be managing the expectations and motivation of the team throughout the highs as well as the lows of the season. We are therefore seeking a planner, who can lead by example, prioritise effectively, and remain calm under pressure.

Skills & Experience
• An in-depth understanding of winter alpine driving techniques, ability to interpret weather and assess road conditions is essential.
• Demonstratable prior experience driving passenger vehicles in an alpine environment is also required.
• Ability to plan ahead to ensure the right vehicles and personnel are in the right place at the right time
• Adaptable and responsive to the demands of our seasonal business and changing environment
• Dedicated, flexible and willing to take ownership of the staff and guests experience
• Be committed to learning and self-development
• Excellent customer service & communication skills and willingness to lead others in these areas
• Demonstrated ownership of Health & Safety in the workplace
• Comfortable working outside in variable conditions, and available for early/late shifts as required
• A large part of this role involves working outdoors on your feet all day in all types of weather, so a reasonable level of fitness is required.
• A practical problem solver, able to remain calm under pressure and plan ahead
• Ability to develop effective on-going relationships with staff, guests, and other stakeholders
• Ability to develop, interpret and enforce policies as required
• Ability to extract, interpret and analyse data to make recommendations for ongoing improvements.
Qualifications
• New Zealand Driver’s License Class 2 with P endorsement
