Security Specialist
Contact EnergyContact Energy (Te Tākinatanga) is expanding its security team with a newly created Security Specialist role based onsite in Auckland. The company is a power, broadband, and mobile provider that’s investing in renewable energy and smarter ways of working to help Aotearoa thrive. The Security and Infrastructure group is bringing security closer to the squads doing the mahi, so this role is all about reducing risk early and turning security requirements into practical solutions the teams can actually use.
The role is a great fit for someone who wants meaningful security work that touches real systems and services New Zealand relies on. You’ll work with squads across Trading and Corporate, helping people understand risk and shape controls so projects stay moving. If you like translating technical risk into plain business language and collaborating with diverse teams, you’ll feel right at home.
Contact supports flexible working and has main hubs in Wellington and Auckland. This position benefits from being able to work from one of those hubs to enable strong in-person connection and collaboration, though there are smaller sites across other centres. If you’re looking for a chance to influence security across multiple parts of a large organisation, this could be the right place for you.
Guarding the digital front for Trading and Corporate
You’ll move between priorities as needs shift, translating technical risk into understandable business implications and deciding when to go deep or step back to focus on what matters most. The aim isn’t to shut things down, but to combine technical depth with practical collaboration so teams can find a path forward that keeps critical work moving. Beyond day-to-day work, you’ll contribute to the wider security chapter, sharing knowledge and owning a capability that complements the rest of the team.
The portfolio you’ll touch is varied: you might support a major Corporate platform upgrade, advise on work connected to the Trading Domain, or help a squad shape controls for a new technology initiative. Your role will involve guiding conversations about risk, offering pragmatic options, and helping squads weigh trade-offs so delivery stays on track while security remains front and centre.
What we’re looking for
We value a solid technical foundation paired with the credibility to act as a security adviser. It’s important to be able to work independently, stay organised when multiple demands collide, and explain security concepts to people who don’t speak security natively.
- Three to five years of hands-on experience in a relevant ICT domain, such as information security, risk management, audit, or an equivalent discipline.
- Applied information-security expertise in a large, complex organisation.
- Broad security knowledge with the judgement to translate risk into practical actions you can implement.
- Strong communication and consulting skills, particularly the ability to explain technical ideas in language that business people understand.
- High integrity, self-management, and the ability to prioritise under pressure.
Cloud and cloud-networking experience would be especially useful, and exposure to banking, finance or trading environments could help you understand the context quickly. Certifications in security or cloud are welcome, but the emphasis is on how you’ve applied knowledge in real situations. You don’t have to have every bullet in place, transferable evidence across technical security, risk, and stakeholder partnership will also be valued.
Compensation, perks and practical details
The team supports flexible working, with the role most naturally positioned to connect from a main hub in either Wellington or Auckland to foster strong in-person collaboration. Proximity to a core hub matters for this role, with smaller sites available in other centres.
Along with the chance to grow your security capabilities, the role comes with a range of perks designed to support wellbeing and balance. These include health insurance, a boosted KiwiSaver, access to Contact Shares, a Good to be Home annual payment toward your home setup and wellbeing, a parental leave policy that stands out, and twice-yearly payments toward products if you’re a Contact customer. Applications close on Thursday 12th November, and the right to live and work in New Zealand is a prerequisite for consideration.
Contact emphasises belonging and inclusion, aiming to reflect the diversity of its customers and communities. The wellbeing of its kaimahi matters, with resources and flexible options to support physical, mental, financial and emotional health. The organisation invites applicants from diverse backgrounds to bring their passion and attitude to the team.
Guidance for applicants
Put a clear summary at the top of your resume that foregrounds 3–5 years of ICT security, risk management, or auditing work in a large organisation, with a line that demonstrates how you’ve helped teams move forward rather than just identify issues.
When you illustrate your must-have skills, share concrete evidence of turning risk into practical actions and of communicating security concepts in business terms. Include an example where you explained a complex security idea to non-security stakeholders and gained buy-in to a pragmatic solution.
Prepare for interviews by describing how you prioritise when faced with competing demands and how you decide when to go deep into a technical issue versus stepping back to protect delivery timelines. Bring a story that highlights collaboration with a cross-functional team and a moment when you balanced risk with progress to unblock work.
End with a thoughtful question that shows you understand this role sits between Trading and Corporate. For example: what does success look like in the first 90 days, and how would this role partner with squads across the Trading Domain and Corporate platforms to deliver both security and business outcomes?
