The Director of Platform Technology is responsible for the technology platforms that enable Coates solutions to be deployed and managed at scale across physical locations. This role owns the intersection of the Coates proprietary operating system, media player hardware, and application stack — ensuring the platform is architecturally fit for purpose to enable a diverse estate of customer sites. Reporting to the CTO, the role operates with cross-functional influence across product, engineering, commercial, and customer-facing teams, and is accountable for both the evolution of the platform and the lifecycle management of what is already in the field.

Key responsibilities for the role

HW Platform architecture & ownership

  • Serve as technical owner of the Coates operating system and HW platform stack, defining the architecture that governs how the application, OS, and physical player hardware manifest in the physical locations.

  • Establish and enforce HW platform standards, configuration baselines, and governance frameworks that enable consistent, scalable deployments across the estate.

  • Maintain authoritative documentation of the HW platform architecture and lead its evolution in line with product and commercial direction.

  • Hardware platform strategy

    • Define and maintain a tiered model of physical player technology, mapping hardware performance tiers to application capability and commercial positioning.

    • Validate and formally approve new physical platform technologies before adoption into the Coates ecosystem.

    • Own the hardware lifecycle strategy — from procurement standards and refresh cycles through to retirement — standardising models across the estate to improve supportability and cost efficiency.

    • Deployment & upgrade engineering

      • Drive the evolution of Coates deployment and upgrade models to reduce time, cost, and operational complexity for both Coates and its customers.

      • Define and implement secure, scalable approaches to OS patching, application updates, and remote device management across the deployed estate.

      • Lead the architecture for new site deployments, platform rollouts, and technology pilots — including tooling, imaging standards, and provisioning processes.

      • Fleet operations & observability

        • Ensure the reliability and uptime of the Coates technology estate through robust monitoring, observability tooling, and incident management frameworks.

        • Act as the senior escalation point for complex platform incidents spanning hardware, OS, network, or application layers.

        • Drive continuous improvement by analysing incident patterns, eliminating systemic issues, and providing regular estate health reporting.

        • Commercial & strategic contribution

          • Partner with the CTO and commercial leadership to define technology tiers that reflect genuine performance differentiation and support compelling customer propositions.

          • Evaluate emerging technologies and vendor solutions with both a technical and commercial lens, contributing platform capability to the product roadmap.

          • Define strategies to enable Coates solutions across mixed and multi-architecture store environments, expanding the addressable customer base.

Qualifications and experience

  • 7+ years’ experience in platform engineering, systems architecture, or technology infrastructure within a technology product or managed services environment.

  • Demonstrated ownership of a proprietary or embedded technology platform — including OS management, device configuration, and fleet-scale deployment.

  • Proven experience managing field-deployed hardware estates across distributed locations, ideally in a comparable industry.

  • Track record of translating platform architecture decisions into commercial outcomes, including contribution to product strategy, tiered service models, or cost reduction initiatives.

  • Experience building and leading technical teams, with the ability to operate credibly across engineering, product, and executive stakeholders
