This is your opportunity to lead complex geotechnical assessments, influence engineering standards, and provide specialist advice across New Zealand’s largest local authority.

Auckland Council’s Engineering, Assets and Technical Advisory department is seeking an experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our Geotechnical team. Working across a range of council departments, including Planning and Resource Consents, Building Consents, Resilience and Insurance, Parks and Community Facilities, and Healthy Waters, you will help deliver sound engineering outcomes and support Auckland’s resilience and growth.

As a senior member of the team, you will provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, contribute to engineering standards and guidance, and act as a trusted advisor on complex geotechnical matters.

You can expect to:

• lead and review complex geotechnical assessments and provide specialist engineering advice
• lead and support consent, compliance, natural hazard, and risk management activities
• review geotechnical investigations and designs prepared by external consultants
• contribute to the development of engineering standards, guidance, and best practices
• mentor engineers and provide technical leadership across the organisation
• support emergency response and recovery activities relating to geotechnical hazards

You will be based in our office in the Auckland City Centre and we offer some flexibility to work from home or at other council offices.

He kōrero mōu: About you

You are an experienced geotechnical professional with strong technical capability, sound engineering judgement, and excellent stakeholder management skills. You bring experience from consulting, local government, or a similar environment and are comfortable providing advice on complex engineering and natural hazard matters.

We will be looking for specific experience with the key role requirements:

• a Bachelor’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Geology, or a related discipline
• significant New Zealand experience in geotechnical investigations, assessments, and design reviews
• strong knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles relating to land development, infrastructure, and buildings
• experience providing technical leadership and mentoring
• a sound understanding of relevant New Zealand legislation, standards, and industry practices
• CPEng status (or the ability to obtain it) would be highly desirable
