Join Auckland Council as a Senior Healthy Waters Specialist – Flood Risk Intelligence and play a pivotal role in developing and applying robust technical methodologies to understand and manage flood risk across the region.


Reporting to the Manager Flood Risk, you will be part of a dynamic and collaborative team dedicated to enhancing Tāmaki Makaurau’s resilience to flooding and climate change.


This position combines strategic foresight with technical expertise, offering a unique and fulfilling career path.


Day-to-day you could expect to work on:

  • Scoping, planning, and managing projects within the Flood Risk work programme
  • Coordinating consultants, contractors, and internal specialists for high-quality outputs
  • Developing and refining flood hazard and risk assessment methodologies and tools
  • Producing and quality assuring information on regional flooding issues
  • Leading projects to understand climate change impacts on Auckland's flood risk

You have a strong expertise in flood risk management and resilience planning. Your exceptional technical acumen, strategic insight, and outstanding communication skills empower you to shape policy, guide planning, and drive investment decisions with confidence.


You excel in dynamic environments, showcasing adaptability, and a proactive problem-solving approach. As a collaborative team player, you are dedicated to advancing Auckland’s flood resilience and making a lasting impact.


We will be looking for the following specific qualifications and experience:

  • Tertiary qualification in hydrology or other water-related science field, environmental or other engineering, geography, or a related discipline.
  • 6+ years’ experience in water engineering, catchment management, hydrological modelling, or a related field.
  • Experience with flood risk management and resilience planning
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical work and guide others in complex, multi-disciplinary environments
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical material to non-technical audiences
