Ferrovial Construction, a global leader in infrastructure, is seeking a Senior MEP Design Engineer to join its Heathrow Airport team. Ferrovial operates in more than 15 countries and employs over 22,000 professionals worldwide, with a portfolio that includes the New Terminal One project at JFK International Airport. Ferrovial’s history spans roads, airports, highways, construction and energy, and its projects are known for scale and impact, including a track record of more than 304 miles of tunnels, 11,930 miles of roads (including 2,485 miles of highways), 2,920 miles of railroad lines (including 434 miles of high-speed rail), and 16,994 miles of road maintenance and repair.

The Senior MEP Design Engineer will join the Design Management team at Heathrow, working onsite and collaborating closely with the Project Manager as well as Clients, Design Consultants and other stakeholders on all design and engineering matters. The role requires delivering design solutions that are safe, on schedule, within budget, and aligned with design, quality, health, safety and wellbeing, and sustainability standards. It also involves supporting the Design Manager with contract administration, handling design changes, risks and opportunities, and helping with the selection and appointment of design consultants. In addition, you’ll be looking for opportunities to apply new tools, technologies, and innovative approaches to improve project delivery and drive continuous improvement.

Location is Heathrow Airport, and the role sits onsite within Ferrovial Construction’s Heathrow team. The company describes a culture that values collaboration, innovation, and inclusion, and it highlights opportunities to grow across global business units while benefiting from a comprehensive benefits package and wellbeing initiatives. The posting notes that Ferrovial supports the use of modern productivity tools to help you work more effectively.

A day in the life on site at Heathrow

On a typical day you’ll coordinate design activities across Heathrow projects, ensuring clear interfaces between disciplines and alignment with the project programme and cost plan. You’ll lead the tendering of design packages from client briefs, shaping scope, conducting technical reviews, and negotiating with stakeholders up and downstream. You’ll also define and manage the Design Responsibility Matrix so ownership is clear and gaps or overlaps are avoided, keeping the design team focused and integrated. In addition, you’ll oversee multidisciplinary teams, monitor progress to safeguard safety, time, and budget, and contribute to the planning of resources.

You’ll guide design reviews with both internal colleagues and external partners, capture requirements, and ensure proposals meet project objectives. You’ll promote innovation, sustainability, and value engineering as the design develops, and you’ll work with procurement to define subcontract scopes and support package procurement within the project’s financial parameters. You’ll ensure that all designs comply with health, safety, environmental, quality, inclusion, accessibility, client, and regulatory requirements, and you’ll coordinate with Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental teams to demonstrate how safety and sustainability principles are integrated into the design. You’ll also liaise with client representatives, project stakeholders, and construction teams to keep design development buildable and cost-effective, and you’ll present proposals to stakeholders while incorporating feedback. Where needed, you’ll connect with Engineering Services in Spain to stay aligned with Ferrovial design standards and practices, and you’ll review and certify monthly consultant payment applications and prepare monthly design KPIs to track performance against targets.

What you’ll bring to the role

What matters most are the capabilities you bring to the table. Here’s what Ferrovial looks for in this senior role, followed by a few extras that would help you stand out.

  • Extensive hands-on experience coordinating or managing design across construction projects, especially scenarios that involve several disciplines.
  • A solid grasp of MEP and civil engineering design principles and how they fit into multi-discipline project delivery.
  • Working knowledge of BIM processes and digital engineering tools to drive efficient design collaboration.
  • Good familiarity with health and safety legislation and industry standards relevant to the built environment.
  • Experience steering design programmes, budgets, and deliverables within cost-conscious environments.
  • Strong leadership and people-management skills, with a track record of coordinating multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder-management abilities, including the knack for influencing at various levels.
  • Organisational discipline and the ability to juggle multiple deadlines while working with minimal supervision.
  • A proactive mindset toward adopting emerging technologies and integrating them into the project lifecycle.
  • Fluent English, both written and spoken.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience coordinating with clients, design consultants and construction teams on airport or other large transportation projects.
  • Familiarity with processing consultants’ monthly payment applications or similar procurement activities tied to design work.
  • Exposure to working with teams in different countries, for example coordinating with Engineering Services in Spain to align with Ferrovial standards.
  • Record of presenting design proposals to a mix of internal and external stakeholders and driving alignment through reviews.

Pay, benefits and practical details

The role is full-time and onsite at Heathrow Airport in the United Kingdom, embedded with Ferrovial Construction’s Heathrow operations. Ferrovial emphasizes a culture that supports inclusion and offers a comprehensive benefits package and wellbeing initiatives to employees.

Advice for applicants

Lead your resume with evidence of design coordination or design management on large infrastructure projects, especially those that involve MEP and civil interfaces and airport-scale work. A strong opening can set you apart by showing you’ve steered multi-disciplinary design from concept to delivery and kept interfaces clear.

Show concrete examples of your must-have skills by describing how you’ve used BIM and digital tools to coordinate teams, manage health and safety compliance, and keep design programs on track. Where possible, quantify outcomes like on-time design milestones or budget adherence to illustrate impact.

Get ready to discuss tendering and design package management in interviews. You’ll want solid anecdotes about leading design reviews, managing changes, and delivering design proposals that balanced stakeholder requirements with cost controls, all while aligning with safety and sustainability goals.

Ask a sharp question about how the Heathrow team currently integrates Design for Safety, Design for Sustainability, and emerging tools into everyday design practice, and how you would drive those initiatives as a Senior MEP Design Engineer. A good question could also explore cross-border collaboration, such as coordination with the Spain-based Engineering Services team and how that alignment happens in practice.
