Senior QA Engineer
PushpayPushpay is looking for a Senior QA Engineer to join onsite in Auckland, NZ for a full-time role. You’ll be part of an engineering team that collaborates with software engineers, product managers, designers and SRE, covering both front-end and back-end testing. This is a hands-on position that expects you to shape quality early, dig into issues, support triage and help the team decide where testing will make the biggest impact. The emphasis isn’t on automation alone; what matters most is how you think, your curiosity, judgement, creativity and ability to assess risk. If you enjoy scrutinising how systems could fail and what quality means for customers, this could be your next move.
In this role you’ll operate alongside an engineering squad, testing across the full stack and contributing to quality from the outset. You’ll help the team surface risks, validate assumptions and spot gaps before features reach production. Think beyond the happy path, prioritise testing based on customer impact and business value, and investigate defects deeply by following clues and testing hypotheses. You’ll triage issues raised by customers and internal teams, take a system-wide view rather than focusing on a single ticket, and help keep important quality concerns visible and well-prioritised. The goal is to continuously improve testing practices, documentation and ways of working, while sharing knowledge and mentoring less experienced teammates.
Shaping quality from the start
You’ll test across both front-end and back-end systems as part of a cross-disciplinary team. You’ll get involved early to challenge risk, assumptions and potential gaps, and you’ll look beyond straightforward success scenarios to understand how things could fail. Your understanding of the customer will drive how you prioritise testing based on impact and business value, and you’ll dive into defects with a methodical approach, testing hypotheses and patterns. When issues arise, you’ll analyse and triage them with input from customers and internal stakeholders, keeping a holistic view of the system rather than treating a ticket as an isolated problem. You’ll contribute to keeping quality issues visible and prioritised, continually refine testing practices, and share what you learn with the team to raise the overall level of quality.
What you’ll bring to the team
You’ll likely have 5+ years of QA or software testing experience, ideally in a SaaS or product-focused setting. More than ticking boxes, the right candidate brings a mindset that’s relentlessly curious about how software works, enjoys uncovering the unexpected, and thinks in terms of risk, systems and customer impact. You know how to investigate problems, not just execute predefined test cases, and you’re comfortable moving between front-end behaviour and back-end logic. Clear communication across disciplines is part of your toolkit, and you mix creativity with pragmatism to find practical testing approaches.
- You have 5+ years in QA or software testing, with solid exposure to SaaS or product environments
- You’re naturally curious about how software operates
- You enjoy finding issues that aren’t immediately obvious
- You frame work in terms of risk, system interactions and customer impact
- You investigate issues and develop test approaches rather than only following scripts
- You can switch between frontend behaviours and backend logic with ease
- You communicate clearly and collaborate well with engineers, product and design
- You bring a blend of creativity and practicality to testing
- You’re comfortable with Jira and Confluence for tracking and documentation
- Experience with Playwright and Postman is useful but not essential
- Automation experience is welcome, but this is not an automation-first role
Automation is welcome, but this is not an automation-first role. The team would rather hire someone who asks the right questions, spots hidden risks and understands what quality really means for the customer.
If that sounds like you, they’d love to talk.
