Royal London is hiring a Senior Software Engineer (PHP) to join the Long Standing Customer Group Technology and Change function in Alderley Edge on a permanent hybrid basis, reporting to a Lead Software Engineer and contributing across the full software development lifecycle to design, develop and deliver high quality PHP solutions that meet business and customer needs. You will design complex PHP solutions, perform impact assessments, produce technical designs, uphold coding standards, work with testing teams for thorough QA, enable safe production deployments and share knowledge across the team while driving continuous improvement. The ideal candidate has PHP plus Azure, .NET or Angular, strong agile experience and automated testing familiarity, with the ability to work independently or as part of a collaborative engineering team. We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer (PHP) to join our Long Standing Customer Group Technology and Change function at Royal London. This is a great opportunity for an experienced PHP engineer to play a key role in designing, developing and delivering high‑quality software solutions that meet business and customer needs.

 

Reporting to a Lead Software Engineer, you’ll work as part of a collaborative team, contributing strong technical expertise across the full software development lifecycle.

 

 

About the role

 

 

  • Designing, developing, testing and implementing complex software solutions within PHP
  • Carrying out impact assessments for complex changes to existing applications
  • Producing and agreeing technical designs in advance of development and in line with agreed standards
  • Ensuring all code meets Royal London standards, guidelines and quality gates for the relevant technology
  • Working closely with testing teams to ensure solutions are thoroughly tested and issues are identified early
  • Safely implementing technical solutions into production environments
  • Collaborating closely with other engineers and disciplines within the team
  • Reviewing the work of other developers and contributing to shared coding standards and practices
  • Supporting continuous improvement by sharing ideas, knowledge and experience across the software development practice.

 

 

About you

 

 

  • Strong technical knowledge with PHP and one or more programming languages including Azure, .Net and Angular
  • Experience delivering solutions across the full software development lifecycle
  • The ability to work independently without close supervision
  • Confidence working collaboratively as part of a wider engineering team
  • Awareness of agile delivery practices
  • Familiarity with automated testing techniques and frameworks.
