Airtasker is seeking a Senior Software Engineer who thrives in a spec-first, agentic development mindset to build scalable AI-enabled features. You’ll own end-to-end delivery, design agent workflows, curate the context that makes agents effective, and mentor engineers while partnering with Product, Data and Design to advance core roadmaps. Must-haves include fluency with AI coding tools, a strong spec-first approach, a root-cause habit for fixes, solid CS fundamentals and a passion for teaching and product impact. Nice-to-haves include multi-agent systems and AI workflow evals. To apply, tailor concrete examples of spec-driven projects, highlight leadership, and follow Airtasker’s internal TA process rather than sending unsolicited resumes; show you fit our hybrid Sydney culture and growth mindset.
Airtasker is Australia's leading platform connecting people who need work done with skilled people who want to do it. We make it easy for everyday Australians to get things done, from furniture assembly to full home renovations, while giving Taskers a flexible way to earn on their own terms.
We're a remote-friendly team based primarily in Sydney, building a platform that has facilitated millions of tasks and helped hundreds of thousands of Taskers grow their businesses.
Engineering at Airtasker is agentic: we work spec-first, directing autonomous systems that author code and curating the context that makes them effective. We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer who already builds this way: someone who can take a fascinating architectural problem, decompose it into agent-executable work, and deliver it to production standards. This isn't a role where AI experience is "a plus". Working this way is the job.
Deliver features through spec-driven, agentic workflows: write clear specs and acceptance criteria, then direct and verify agent-led implementation to production standards
Design agent workflows that solve recurring team problems, defining boundaries, escalation points and where humans stay in the loop
Curate the context that makes agents effective: repo maps, architecture summaries, decision logs and reusable task templates
Own delivery end-to-end: clarify requirements, do the technical research, engage stakeholders and clear blockages
Lead projects of business significance and engage in discussions about company strategy and goals
Partner with Product, Data and Design leaders on core product roadmap initiatives
Help hire and grow strong engineers through interviewing, guidance and mentorship
Must-have
Fluency with AI coding tools (like Claude Code) across the full development lifecycle: exploration, implementation, refactoring, debugging, tests and docs
A spec-first mindset: you decompose work into agent-executable units with clear constraints and acceptance criteria
The root-cause habit: when AI output goes wrong, you stop and ask what was missing from the prompt, the context or the plan, and fix the upstream artifact, not just the symptom
Firm grounding in computer science and engineering fundamentals, with hands-on experience designing scalable architectures
Deep care for the product and commercial context your team operates in
A passion for teaching: you continually invest in your team members' growth and bring new technologies and practices to the team
Nice-to-have
Experience designing multi-step or multi-agent systems, including orchestration and human/agent handoffs
Experience instrumenting and evaluating AI workflows: evals, regression checks, reasoning about cost, latency and quality tradeoffs
Background in product engineering
Experience with marketplaces or two-sided platforms
