Software Engineer - Payments (Java / Spring Boot)
WorldlineWorldline sits at the heart of the payments technology scene, helping businesses of all sizes move money quickly, simply, and securely. With a footprint across five continents, the company processes millions of transactions every day and is focused on shaping how the world pays and gets paid. The opening here is for a Software Engineer - Payments (Java / Spring Boot) to join the Acquiring Global Products back-office team in Zurich, working onsite. If you enjoy building robust systems that scale and want a place where your growth matters, this could be a great fit.
The team believes in giving engineers real ownership: you’ll contribute from early analysis and design through implementation and testing, all the way to operation and support. This is a role where you’re asked to own features end-to-end, including participating in on-call rotations as a natural part of keeping mission-critical services healthy. Worldline seeks people who bring energy and curiosity, and who are ready to grow, whether they’ve got a few years under their belt or are ready to take the next step in their career.
As the role described here, you’d be joining a large, globally distributed payments platform used by merchants around the world. If you’re excited by the idea of shaping evolution in a high-stakes domain and you value a culture of trust and responsibility, you’ll find opportunities to stretch your skills and build a long-term career.
Day-to-day work on a mission-critical payments platform
In this role you’ll help build and evolve a very large, business-critical platform that merchants rely on daily. You’ll work in an agile DevOps team that owns features across the full lifecycle, from analysis and design to implementation, testing, deployment, operation, and ongoing support. Your everyday toolkit will be Java and Spring Boot for backend development, with Oracle databases (SQL / PL-SQL) playing a central role in the data landscape. The environment is a hybrid mix of containerized services and bare-metal infrastructure, so you’ll get hands-on experience across both worlds. You’ll ship with modern CI/CD practices, using GitLab CI, and you’ll rely on infrastructure automation with Ansible to keep things repeatable and reliable. Worldline also encourages the smart use of AI tooling to boost code quality and speed, with examples like GitHub Copilot and Claude Code in the mix. And, of course, you’ll participate in on-call / stand-by rotations to ensure the systems you build stay healthy and available.
Core qualifications we’re looking for
- A genuine passion for writing software and a desire to keep learning
- Some professional experience building software; you don’t need to be a senior, but you should be comfortable contributing to real-world systems
- Working knowledge of Java and Spring Boot, or a strong willingness to grow into it
- Experience with database development, ideally Oracle SQL / PL-SQL
- Familiarity with containers and openness to working with bare-metal environments
- A practical mindset for using AI tooling in everyday development
- Hands-on experience with version control, preferably Git
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Very good German and English skills, both written and spoken
- A customer-oriented, independent, flexible, creative, and pragmatic team player
- Willingness and availability for 24/7 on-call duty as a core part of the role
