Downer is seeking a Trainee Line Mechanic for Coromandel to join its Network Services team. Over a two year training pathway you’ll learn from industry experts to become a qualified Distribution Line Mechanic, with on the job development and coaching in real hands on outdoor work. The role is physically active and varied, involving plant operation while you build safety and technical skills. You’ll need a Class 1 manual licence (Class 2 is highly regarded), a safety minded approach, good communication and reliability, and the ability to work shifts including nights and weekends. Open NZ working rights and willingness to relocate are required. We’re looking for a Trainee Line Mechanic to join our Network Services team based in the Coromandel. Working alongside industry experts, you’ll learn the skills required to become a qualified Distribution Line Mechanic while earning, training, and gaining real hands-on experience in the field.

Training typically takes 2 years, and we support you every step of the way with industry-recognised learning, coaching, and on-the-job development.

This is a physically active, outdoor role where no two days are the same. You’ll work across different sites, operate plant and equipment, and develop the technical and safety skills needed to succeed in the electricity distribution industry.

Nga pūkenga matua | Important Skills
You’re motivated, practical, and genuinely keen to build a career. Someone with an electrical background or interest, who has completed a pre-trades course would be beneficial. 

You’ll bring:

  • A Class 1 manual driver’s licence essential, Class 2 highly regarded
  • A strong commitment to safety and accuracy
  • The attitude to learn and be mentored by industry experts
  • Physical fitness and comfort working outdoors in all conditions
  • Good communication skills and reliability
  • The ability to commit to shift patterns with occasional night, weekend and on-call shifts - well rewarded through great penalty rates and allowances!
  • Open working rights in New Zealand, and be based in, near or willing to relocate to the Coromandel region.
