Anglo American Australia is looking for a Training Coordinator to join the Capcoal Mine team in Middlemount, Queensland. The role is based onsite and reports to the Training Superintendent, with a clear focus on building and delivering training that stays compliant with corporate standards and regulatory requirements. Anglo American operates five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin and holds joint venture interests in manganese as well as copper exploration projects in North West Queensland, making this a chance to influence safety and capability across a major mining operation. This position suits someone who blends training expertise with a practical, hands-on approach to safety and workforce development.

In this role, you’ll shape the training landscape at Capcoal, validating training and assessment across all coal mine workers and keeping the site induction program current for both employees and contractors. You’ll coach and mentor staff to grow skills relevant to their roles and ensure everyone is trained, competent and authorised under the Capcoal Mine Training and Competence Scheme. You’ll enforce the scheme and training procedures, review training performance for continuous improvement, and manage governance around the Learning Management System to guarantee consistent application across the mine. You’ll work with key stakeholders to support the business plan and demonstrate active leadership in safety, helping to foster a culture where safety is the top priority.

A day in the life at Capcoal

Day to day, the Training Coordinator ensures training programs are compliant, up-to-date and delivered efficiently to both employees and contractors. You’ll oversee inductions, coordinate learning activities, and ensure the site adheres to the Training and Competence Scheme while guiding staff through the process of becoming certified and authorised to perform their roles. Collaboration with operations, safety, and maintenance teams will be essential as you review training outcomes and implement improvements that reduce risk and improve performance in a live mining environment.

Beyond administration, you’ll engage with stakeholders to align training with the mine’s business goals, and you’ll act as a safety leader who motivates others to work safely and contribute to a stronger safety culture. The role requires practical problem-solving and the ability to adapt training plans as site conditions change, including managing the demands of high-volume work during major shutdowns and other peak periods. In all you do, you’ll prioritise governance and consistency in how training is delivered across Capcoal.

What it takes to lead training on site

  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116/22 or equivalent) or higher
  • Experience in driving training strategy and translating business goals into active programs
  • Ability to assist with the training department’s budget and expenditure
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills to influence stakeholders
  • Experience handling high-volume work during major projects or shutdowns
  • Adaptability in changing situations and solid problem-solving abilities
  • Proven capability to manage and deliver site-based training requirements and programs
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Excel and PowerPoint, plus knowledge of Learning Management Systems (LMS)
  • Operational experience within coal mining is preferred

Pay, benefits and working life on site

The position is permanent and full-time at Capcoal Mine in Middlemount, Queensland. The role follows a Monday to Friday site schedule, with potential for a 9-day fortnight. Anglo American offers multiple work arrangement options including Residential, DIDO and FIFO (company funded). The compensation package includes a competitive salary, 12% superannuation and an annual bonus. Additional benefits include subsidised housing with relocation assistance if required, discounted gym membership, and an Employee Assistance Program that supports employees and their families.

Advice for applicants

Lead with your certification. Put your Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116/22 or equivalent) at the top of your resume and show it ties to hands-on coal mine training experience, since that’s a primary requirement.

Show how you’ve proven LMS and office tool skills in a mining context. Include a concrete example of how you maintained site compliance through an LMS and how governance ensured consistent application across the mine, plus any improvements you implemented through training programs.

Be ready with a concrete scenario where you developed or rolled out a training program aligned with business goals. Describe how you’d approach the Capcoal Mine Training and Competence Scheme and how you’d measure its impact on safety and competency on site.

Have a thoughtful question prepared about how Capcoal measures training effectiveness and safety culture year to year, specifically referencing governance around the Training and Competence Scheme and how outcomes are tracked across shifts and teams.
