Summary

Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President (SVP) of Advancement for Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), the Vice President of Development (VPD) will lead a professional staff of fundraising professionals and serve as a key member and thought leader of the SVP’s senior leadership team. Working on behalf of the SVP and BCM executive leadership, the VPD develops short and long-term strategies for ongoing fundraising and special program initiatives. The VPD will align priorities into coherent fundraising messages and cases for support that amplify and accelerate performance. The VPD works to continuously develop a vision and narrative for ongoing communication of Baylor College of Medicine’s strengths and value. Through these endeavors the position seeks to strategize, forge and embolden relationships with existing and new generations of donors, drawing from the institution’s wide array of friends, alumni, parents, grateful patients, and volunteers to secure transformational philanthropy for Baylor College of Medicine. From this expansive outward facing relationship to the community, the VPD returns value to the College in the form of gifts and pledges secured, as well as vital feedback and representation of the donor and volunteer communities served. 

Job Duties

The Vice President of Development will lead the overall frontline program strategy and integrate the following fundraising areas: Individual Giving (Leadership Giving, Major & Principal Gifts, Estate and Gift Planning), Foundations, Corporate Relations, Research and Grant Management in partnership with the Dean of Research, and Transformational Giving (a focus of securing gifts at the $10M plus from individuals, corporations, and foundations). The VPD will also maintain and build an individual, dynamic portfolio of primarily transformational prospects representative of the most influential, supportive, and actively engaged constituents to BCM with individual and team annual goals agreed upon with the SVP. As BCM approaches the public phase of a $1 billion philanthropic campaign, the VPD will also actively focus on ways to ensure completion of the academic and capital priorities as part of the Campaign as well as ensure the successful launch and completion of the public phase.

 

Working in a diplomatic style that inspires trust and collaboration within the team and the entire leadership of BCM, the VPD will deliver customer-centered development operations and will provide primary leadership and oversight of all frontline fundraising staff and will hold ultimate accountability for fundraising performance on behalf of clinical, educational and research initiatives across all Baylor controlled enterprises and partnerships. 

 

Provide leadership, oversight, and management responsibility for all transformational, principal and major gifts; gift and estate planning; foundation relations; corporate relations; prospect pipeline, including building and improving grateful patient and alumni support; and donor relations. Implement the comprehensive, multiyear business plan, budget, and fundraising strategy to augment staffing expansion, and optimize performance across all fundraising programs and portfolios, producing a sustainable pipeline of principal, and transformational giving opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Minimum of eleven years of relevant experience to include at least 5 years in a leadership role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Twelve years of direct fundraising experience, seven years of supervisory experience, and direct experience leading and managing a complex team.
  • Membership in Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Association of Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
