Murphy, a leading international engineering and construction group, is looking for a Works Superintendent to join its on-site team in London. The company works across infrastructure, transportation and energy projects and values safety, quality and practical leadership on site. This role will appeal to hands-on professionals who enjoy coordinating resources and guiding complex on-site operations to successful completion.

As the Works Superintendent, you’ll be the on-site lead coordinating plant, machinery and materials to keep productivity high while aligning with project schedules. You’ll oversee multiple workstreams spanning earthworks, drainage and civil operations, applying best practices and ensuring compliance with environmental and safety standards. You’ll work closely with subcontractors and internal teams to keep the workflow smooth and the project moving forward.

The role is based on site in London and suits someone who thrives when taking charge on site, keeping safety front and centre, and delivering high-quality work from start to finish.

A day in the life on site

On a typical day you’ll manage on-site resources to optimise productivity and project efficiency, ensuring the right plant, equipment and materials are in the right place at the right time. You’ll oversee several workstreams across earthworks, drainage and civil operations, applying industry best practices while maintaining compliance with safety and environmental standards, and you’ll coordinate closely with subcontractors and internal teams to keep work flowing and timelines intact.

You’ll run site briefings and risk assessments, keep project managers, clients and stakeholders aligned, and uphold Murphy’s quality controls to support successful delivery. You’ll be expected to deliver work to the highest specification, maintaining rigorous quality throughout the project lifecycle.

What you need to bring to the job

  • Experience on major projects delivering drainage, utilities, pavements, piling and reinforced concrete ground-level structures; marine experience would be a plus
  • CSCS certification
  • SSSTS or SMSTS certification
  • SR163 certification is ideal but not essential
  • Strong communication skills
  • Proven ability to collaborate and build solid working relationships across teams
  • Willingness to travel and stay away from home
  • Proficiency with relevant engineering software and Microsoft Office, especially Excel
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Experience in marine projects would be advantageous
  • An SR163 credential would be a bonus

Pay, benefits and logistics

The role offers a starting salary from £78,000.00 per year, with a 39-hour standard working week and overtime paid at time and a half after 39 hours.

Benefits include a Healthcare Cash Plan, 30 days of holiday, and opportunities for advancement along with further training. The work environment prioritises health and safety and there is a supportive team culture to help you grow.

The position is on-site in London, and travel or overnight stays may be required to support project needs. Murphy cannot employ anyone who does not have the legal right to live and work in the UK. A full UK driving licence is required.

Guidance for applicants

Lead your resume with your major project experience, placing emphasis on drainage, utilities, pavements, piling and RC ground-level structures; mention any marine work if you have it.

When you describe your on-site impact, show concrete examples of clear communication and collaboration with subcontractors and various internal teams, and note how you helped keep projects on track and compliant with safety standards.

In interviews, be prepared to talk about site safety procedures, risk assessments and site briefings you’ve led, as well as how you’ve implemented Murphy-style quality controls to meet exacting specifications.

Ask a thoughtful question about Murphy’s current project mix in London and how the team balances safety, quality and schedule on multi-stream worksites.
