Assessment Writer
Location: Fully Remote in NZ
Independent Contracting | Remote – Anywhere in NZ

About the engagement

NZMA is seeking an experienced Assessment Writer to provide independent assessment development services during a period of increased product development and programme launches.

The engagement will involve developing assessments across a range of vocational programmes, including health and wellbeing, sport, and work readiness. The assessment materials will cover NZQA Levels 2–6 and must be appropriate for the relevant learner group, compliant with applicable requirements, and aligned with approved programme documentation.

This is an independent contractor engagement anticipated to run for approximately three to four months, commencing in August 2026 or earlier by agreement. The successful contractor will need sufficient availability and capacity to deliver the agreed assessment materials within the required project timeframes.

Scope of services

The contractor will be engaged to:

  • Develop student assessments and tutor marking guides based on NZQA-approved programme documentation
  • Ensure assessments align clearly with relevant programme outcomes and learning outcomes
  • Develop supplementary materials required to support the assessment documentation
  • Collaborate with relevant subject matter experts, and internal stakeholders to understand assessment requirements
  • Incorporate feedback and revisions as required
  • Produce accurate, high-quality assessment materials within agreed delivery timeframes
  • Ensure all assessment materials meet relevant NZQA, moderation, and compliance requirements

Qualifications

Contractor experience and capability

We are looking for an experienced assessment writer who can work independently across a range of vocational subject areas and deliver accurate, high-quality work within agreed timeframes.

To be considered, you should be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience developing tertiary-level student assessments and tutor assessment resources across NZQA Levels 2–6
  • Experience in assessment design and development for adult learners within a vocational education environment
  • A strong understanding of NZQA requirements, including graduate profile outcomes, learning outcomes, and assessment standards
  • Knowledge of moderation processes and relevant education compliance requirements
  • The ability to interpret approved programme documentation and translate it into clear and appropriate assessment materials
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, learner-focused resources
  • Openness to feedback and the ability to incorporate required changes promptly
