Part-time
On-site
Thornbury, AU
$80,000 - $110,000 AUD yearly

Bytewize, a long-established ICT services partner, is hiring for a part-time, on-site Systems Engineer / Specialist Technician to support the Department of Education through the Technical Support to Schools Program. The role is based in Thornbury, AU, and Bytewize will employ the successful candidate directly to deliver ICT support within Victoria’s schools. Bytewize first started working with the TSSP in 2001, building a solid reputation for dependable ICT assistance across schools and private-sector environments.

This is not an entry-level opportunity. The team is looking for someone with at least five years of industry experience, with preference for candidates who have previously worked on the TSSP, spent time in the education sector, or held senior IT support roles in corporate settings. If you enjoy solving complex tech challenges, partnering with school leaders, and helping staff and students stay connected, this could be a strong fit.

The role centers on keeping school ICT infrastructure healthy, supporting a wide range of devices and users, and managing complex enterprise environments. You’ll work with DoE networks and servers, support large, technology-powered learning spaces, and contribute to professional development when needed. It’s a hands-on position that rewards practical problem solving and clear communication with educators and administrators alike.

Day-to-day in the classrooms and data centers

You’ll manage and maintain ICT infrastructure across Department of Education schools, ensuring reliable access to networks, servers and essential tools for staff and students.

In practice, that means administering school networks and enterprise server environments, delivering ICT services in large, technology-driven learning environments, and partnering with school leadership to roll out initiatives and provide targeted professional development when required.

The work blends hands-on system administration with collaborative training and guidance, so you’ll need to balance technical execution with ongoing stakeholder communication to keep projects moving smoothly.

What you must bring, and what would help you stand out

  • Hyper‑V virtualization administration
  • Administration of Windows and Linux-based servers
  • Cloud service administration across Google Workspace and Microsoft 365
  • Mobile Device Management deployment and ongoing administration
  • Advanced enterprise networking skills, including Cisco and HP switching
  • Cisco wireless technologies, including controllers and access points
  • SOE and image deployment with strong troubleshooting capabilities
  • Experience supporting large fleets of desktops and notebooks
  • Experience with 1:1 and BYOD device planning, deployment, and management
  • Strong technical documentation abilities

Nice-to-haves include prior experience within the TSSP, a proven track record in education‑sector ICT, and the ability to plan and deliver ICT training sessions for staff. In addition, Bytewize values a candidate who can work well both independently and as part of a team, communicates clearly, and can structure troubleshooting steps in a systematic way.

Eligibility to work in Australia (citizen, permanent residency, or permanent visa), a current driver’s licence with a reliable vehicle, and willingness to undergo police and background checks are also important parts of the profile Bytewize seeks for this role.

Pay, benefits and practical details

The position offers a salary range of $80,000 – $110,000 (pro-rata). Compensation is reviewed regularly with top rates guaranteed based on skills and experience. Bytewize provides flexible employment options that include contract, casual, or permanent arrangements, and there are both part-time and full-time openings. Additional benefits may include salary packaging options, potential company vehicle opportunities (role dependent), and ongoing access to training and professional development.

Tips for applicants pursuing this TSSP role

Lead your resume with a concise summary of your five-plus years in IT, and highlight any TSSP experience or strong education-sector ICT credentials you’ve built. Demonstrate how your background maps to maintaining school networks and enterprise environments, and point to specific schools or districts you’ve supported if possible.

When you describe your must-have skills, anchor them to tangible projects: for example, a rollout of BYOD or 1:1 programs, or a major server and network upgrade. If you’ve worked with Hyper‑V, Windows and Linux servers, cloud services, MDM, or Cisco networking, tie each skill to a measurable outcome like reduced downtime or improved teacher access to resources.

Be ready to discuss how you’ve planned and delivered ICT training for staff, including any formal training you’ve led or co-led with school leadership. You’ll likely be asked about managing large fleets of devices and how you ensure consistent support across multiple schools, so prepare a couple of short case studies with clear results.

Ask a practical question about the program’s near-term priorities: what ICT projects are in motion for the next 12 months within the TSSP, and how Bytewize supports ongoing staff training and professional development in schools?
