Doncaster, AU
$80,000 - $110,000 AUD yearly

Bytewize is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer / Specialist Technician to join the team delivering the Technical Support to Schools Program (TSSP) for the Department of Education. The role is onsite in Doncaster, AU, with part-time arrangements and options for contract, casual, or permanent employment. This position is well suited to professionals who relish working in education ICT, enjoy collaborating with school leaders, and want to help keep technology in classrooms running smoothly.

Bytewize has been around since 2001 and is a long-standing TSSP panel member known for reliable ICT support across Victorian schools and private enterprise. They hire seasoned IT professionals to provide technical support to schools through the TSSP, offering a pathway into ongoing or contract work depending on needs and availability. This is a chance to contribute to education technology at scale while working with a dedicated team in a real-world setting.

To be considered, candidates must have at least five years of industry experience, with either prior TSSP involvement, extensive experience in the education sector, or equivalent senior-level corporate IT support experience. The role is not entry-level and seeks people who can bring depth of expertise to a complex, enterprise-level environment.

A day in the life of a school ICT specialist

In this role you’ll take responsibility for managing and maintaining ICT infrastructure across Department of Education schools, ensuring systems are stable and available for daily teaching and administration. You’ll administer and support school networks and server environments, handling tasks from routine maintenance to more complex troubleshooting in large, technology-driven learning settings. You’ll also work closely with school leadership teams to deliver ICT professional development when needed, helping staff make the most of the tools and services in use.

Expect a mix of hands-on technical work and collaborative planning, with a focus on keeping enterprise-level systems secure, well-documented, and aligned with evolving educational technology needs. The job requires a practical, systematic approach to problem-solving and a readiness to communicate clearly with users who vary from classroom staff to senior school leaders.

What you’ll bring to the role

The must-haves include a solid track record and a broad set of technical competencies, reworded to fit the education context:

  • At least five years of industry experience with proven outcomes, including either TSSP exposure, strong education-sector work, or an equivalent senior-level corporate IT background
  • Hyper-V virtualization administration
  • Administration of Windows and Linux-based servers
  • Cloud service administration, specifically Google Workspace and Microsoft 365
  • Mobile Device Management deployment and ongoing administration
  • Advanced enterprise networking experience, including Cisco and HP switching
  • Cisco wireless technologies, covering controllers and access points
  • SOE and image deployment with advanced troubleshooting skills
  • Experience supporting large fleets of desktops and notebooks
  • Experience planning, deploying, and managing 1:1 and BYOD devices
  • Strong technical documentation skills
  • Eligibility to work in Australia (citizen, PR, or permanent visa)
  • Current driver’s license and a reliable motor vehicle
  • Willingness to undergo police and background checks

The Nice-to-haves build on that foundation and reflect additional strengths that would help you stand out:

  • Previous TSSP experience
  • Demonstrated success in education-sector ICT
  • Ability to plan and deliver ICT training sessions for staff

Remuneration and practical details

Remuneration sits in the range of $80,000 – $110,000 (pro-rata). Bytewize offers top rates guaranteed, based on skills and experience, with regular performance-based salary reviews. The role provides flexible employment options, including contract, casual, or permanent arrangements, and both part-time and full-time positions are available. There are opportunities for salary packaging, company vehicle involvement depending on the role, and ongoing training and professional development. The position is onsite in Doncaster, so being able to travel as needed and having a valid license helps; the company also values reliability and a structured approach to work in an education setting.

Advice for applicants

Lead your resume with a summary of your five-plus years in IT, and foreground any TSSP or education-sector work you’ve done, so hiring panels can see immediately you understand the context.

Show what you’ve done with the must-have skills in concrete terms. Describe a project where you managed Hyper-V, Windows and Linux servers, or oversaw cloud services and BYOD deployments, and include measurable outcomes such as uptime improvements or user adoption.

Prepare to talk through how you’ve collaborated with school leadership and delivered ICT training. Be ready with examples of professional development sessions you ran for staff and how you measured their impact on teaching and learning.

Ask smart questions that tie to the role’s realities in education ICT, such as what the first six months look like in Doncaster schools, which systems are priorities, or how Bytewize measures success for TSSP specialists in this region.
