Sovereign Insurance, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Co-operators General Insurance Company, is looking for a Claims Examiner to join its Commercial Auto team in Halifax. This full-time role operates on a hybrid schedule, with about two days in the office each week. If you enjoy digging into policy wordings, evaluating coverage, negotiating settlements, and guiding claims to resolution, this position could be a strong fit.

The National Commercial Auto group handles these inquiries and offers chances to grow into related areas such as Injury, Liability and Property as part of your development. The company promotes purposeful work, collaboration, and contribution to the communities it serves.

You'll thrive here if you bring claims experience, a detail-focused mindset, and a collaborative approach that helps you work well with policyholders, inside teams, and external partners.

Tackling coverage and settlements on commercial auto claims

In this role you'll review policy wordings, provisions, and endorsements to determine what is covered for Commercial Auto Physical Damage losses, and you'll investigate assigned claims within your authority while guiding adjusters, vendors, and solicitors to adhere to established procedures.

Your knowledge of coverages and claims handling techniques will drive negotiations and appropriate reserving, all while maintaining positive relationships with internal and external contacts as you manage loss costs and service levels.

What you must have to apply

Here's the baseline for this position:

  • Two to five years of commercial claims experience.
  • Knowledge of policy wordings and standard claims handling procedures.
  • Completion or current pursuit of Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) courses.

Nice-to-haves can make you stand out:

  • A university degree or college diploma in a related field.
  • Experience handling Commercial Auto lines, including Bodily Injury, General Liability and Third Party Property Damage.

Pay, benefits and practical details

The salary range stated for this role is 60,574.00 CAD to 100,956.00 CAD per year. The final amount will be set by Sovereign at its discretion and will reflect factors like local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualification, experience and education.

This position follows a hybrid work posture with in-office presence required at least twice a week in Halifax.

As part of the package, the company offers a competitive salary with potential incentive opportunities, plus benefits and pension, paid time off, and programs that support development and recognition. The organization emphasizes well-being across physical, mental, social, and financial dimensions.

A background check is a condition of employment for the successful candidate.

Being part of a Canadian organization, the role contributes to protecting Canadian businesses and communities and includes participation in volunteering, donations, and national initiatives aimed at a sustainable future.

Advice for applicants

Lead your resume with your commercial claims background, focusing on the 2-5 years of experience and any Commercial Auto work you’ve handled.

Demonstrate your depth of policy wordings knowledge and claims handling procedures, and if you’ve completed or are pursuing CIP, call that out explicitly.

Be ready to talk about how you collaborate with adjusters, vendors, and solicitors, and share examples of how you’ve kept reserves aligned with company expectations and negotiated settlements.

Ask about cross-training opportunities into Injury, Liability and Property lines and how the hybrid schedule influences day-to-day teamwork and distribution of work.
