Minor International is seeking a full-time Common Area Cleaner to join the onsite housekeeping team at Avani Queenstown Shores Resort in Queenstown, New Zealand. This role focuses on servicing and maintaining the property’s shared spaces to keep them clean, safe and inviting for guests and staff alike. Minor Hotels is a major player in the region, running more than 70 properties locally and boasting a global portfolio of 640 properties across 66 countries, with brands such as Avani, Anantara, Oaks, NH Hotels, NH Collection, nhow and Tivoli. It’s a place for practical people who care about presentation, enjoy working with others and don’t mind a physical, hands-on role with rotating shifts.

As part of the housekeeping family, you’ll help uphold guest satisfaction by keeping lobbies, corridors and other public areas spotless and well presented. Training and the right tools come from the team, and you’ll follow safety practices to protect yourself and guests while using cleaning gear and products. You’ll interact with teammates and guests in a respectful, professional way, contributing to a positive work atmosphere and smooth daily operations on site.

If you value clean spaces, like a role with real hands-on impact, and are comfortable with a schedule that can involve weekends and holidays, this position could be a good match for you.

A day in the life at Avani Queenstown Shores Resort

On a typical day you’ll join a rotating roster with shifts starting in the morning, helping to keep the property’s public areas in top shape. You’ll work with teammates to hit daily cleaning targets, moving through lobbies, corridors and other shared spaces, using the appropriate cleaning methods and equipment that you’ll be trained to use. The work is about consistency, maintaining hygiene, safety and visual appeal across high-traffic areas while coordinating with the team to keep operations running smoothly. You’ll also help maintain supplies and report any issues that affect guest experiences, all while upholding the high standards set by Minor Hotels.

Safety and quality matter here, so you’ll follow environmental and safety protocols and handle cleaning products and equipment with care. Building and maintaining professional relationships with colleagues and guests helps ensure a respectful, welcoming environment for everyone on the property.

Must-have foundations

  • Experience in a resort or hotel setting is valued
  • Great attention to detail and a track record of keeping spaces clean
  • Ability to work well on your own and as part of a team
  • Good physical fitness and stamina for repetitive tasks like bending, lifting and standing for long periods

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional, clear communication with guests, colleagues and contractors
  • Strong time management and the ability to prioritise tasks efficiently
  • A positive, proactive attitude and a solid work ethic
  • Flexibility to work across weekends and public holidays

Pay, benefits and practical details

The role is onsite in Queenstown and follows a rotating roster across Monday to Sunday, with shifts starting between 8:00 am and 9:00 am. It’s a physically demanding job that involves regular heavy lifting and moving of bins and equipment, and handling bulky items as part of daily cleaning tasks.

The company is clear on who can apply: candidates must have working rights in New Zealand to be considered for this position.

What you’ll get in return goes beyond the pay packet. Minor Hotels offers a range of benefits designed to support your growth and wellbeing, including career development opportunities, hotel stays at half price across Australasia for you and 20% off for friends and family, and discounts on international accommodation across its brands. You’ll also find cashback and discounts at more than 400 top retailers in AU/NZ, discounted entertainment and activities, exclusive health insurance offers and workplace banking benefits, parental and birthday leave, and wellness support through an employee assistance program.

In short, you’ll join a dynamic organisation that backs skills development, values teamwork and rewards commitment with a broad set of practical perks and protections.

Advice for applicants

Put any hotel or resort cleaning experience you have up front on your resume, especially roles where you upheld high cleanliness standards or worked in shared spaces.

Show how you’ve proven you can work both independently and with a team. If you’ve had to manage competing tasks or hit time targets, give a concrete example of how you prioritised and got the job done.

Be ready to discuss times you followed safety protocols and used cleaning equipment. Bring a quick anecdote about a situation where you handled a physical task or moved items safely and efficiently.

When you interview, consider asking how the team coordinates to meet daily targets and what kind of training is provided for equipment and products, plus how the role interacts with guests and contractors on a typical shift.
