Mawson Lakes, AU

Lockheed Martin Australia is looking for a Cyber Government Risk & Compliance Specialist to help secure the SouthPAN program from their Mawson Lakes site in South Australia. To apply, you must be an Australian citizen and capable of obtaining and maintaining an active Australian Government Defence security clearance at the level required for the position. SouthPAN is a satellite-based augmentation system that spans Australia, New Zealand and surrounding maritime regions, bringing improved positioning and navigation through a network of reference stations, telecoms infrastructure, computing centres, signal generators and satellites.

In this role, you’ll translate cyber security requirements into governance and engineering outcomes, offering trusted technical guidance to engineering, operational and program stakeholders. The work blends hands-on security practice with advisory leadership, helping to assess risk, review designs and influence security decisions throughout the system lifecycle. It’s a good fit for someone who wants to deepen technical expertise while taking on mentoring and cross-functional coordination across the program.

This opportunity is based in Mawson Lakes, SA, with Melbourne, Victoria-based applicants considered as well. It’s ideal for someone who wants to contribute to a major Defence program and enjoys working with multi-disciplinary teams across borders and functions.

Day-to-day work in the role

Day-to-day, you’ll convert cyber security requirements into practical engineering actions across the system lifecycle, ensuring that designs and architecture remain aligned with security standards. You’ll review ongoing designs and technical changes to gauge security impacts and confirm compliance, while running threat modelling, threat hunting and vulnerability assessments to surface and address cyber risks. You’ll support the creation of cyber security requirements and help implement, validate and verify security controls and risk treatments, using your hands-on experience to mentor others and guide security decisions. Across the program, you’ll provide technical cyber security guidance to engineering, architecture, operations and other stakeholders, applying Defence and Australian Government cyber security frameworks, standards and policies to system architectures and solutions. You’ll participate in security assurance, accreditation and authorisation activities, including risk management reporting, and you’ll help raise cyber security awareness and best practices through mentoring and knowledge transfer across technical teams.

What you’ll need to bring

  • Extensive systems security engineering experience within Defence or similarly complex ICT environments
  • Strong grasp of Defence cyber security frameworks, including DCSAAF, ISM, PSPF, DSPF and SPARTA
  • Proven track record in security architecture, security requirements analysis, assurance, accreditation and risk management
  • Hands-on expertise with Linux administration, VMware environments, system hardening and platform sustainment
  • Experience with Elastic Security, SIEM technologies, security event monitoring and incident response
  • Solid understanding of network architecture, identity and access management, ASD-approved cryptographic requirements and secure system design
  • Demonstrated ability in vulnerability management, threat analysis and developing effective remediation strategies
  • Familiarity with applying AI approaches to cyber security tasks as they relate to this work

Nice-to-have capabilities

  • Past work on Defence or government programs that involve secure system development and accreditation processes
  • Leadership or mentoring experience that helped teams lift security practices
  • Experience collaborating across cross-functional teams and supporting security governance activities

Tips for applicants

Lead your résumé with the Defence-focused security engineering experience you have, especially any work tied to architectures, accreditation or risk management within complex ICT environments. Highlight concrete results from threat modelling, vulnerability remediation and the security controls you helped implement, and call out specific frameworks you’ve applied (DCSAAF, ISM, PSPF, DSPF, SPARTA) to show you’re comfortable with their security landscape.

When you describe your must-have skills, give a brief, specific example for each item: a project where you translated requirements into a secure design, or a scenario where you led risk assessment and accreditation activities. This helps the reader see your ability to connect security expertise to real engineering outcomes.

Prepare for interviews by outlining times you mentored colleagues on cyber security best practices or helped teams improve security awareness. Be ready to discuss how you would approach threat modelling and vulnerability management in a large Defence program like SouthPAN, including how you’d coordinate with architecture, operations and program stakeholders to drive compliant security outcomes.

Have a thoughtful question ready about governance, risk and compliance across the program, such as how security decisions are coordinated across cross-functional teams or how the program prioritises risk treatments under Defence frameworks. A question like that shows you’re thinking about how security works in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.
