Mawson Lakes, AU

Lockheed Martin Australia is seeking a Cyber Systems Security Engineer to help safeguard the SouthPAN Satellite-Based Augmentation System, a network of reference stations, telecommunications infrastructure, computing centres, signal generators and satellites that enhances positioning and navigation services across Australia, New Zealand and its maritime region. The role is full-time and on-site in Mawson Lakes, SA, with applicants from Melbourne, Victoria considered. To be eligible, you must be an Australian citizen and able to obtain and maintain an active Australian Government Defence security clearance at the level required for the position.

Lockheed Martin Australia is part of a global organisation with more than 122,000 professionals, and it emphasises flexible work patterns so people can perform their best both inside and outside of work. This opportunity sits in a program that blends deep technical work with advisory responsibility, giving you a chance to grow your expertise while directly influencing security outcomes across complex Defence systems.

If you want to push your technical skills further while taking on leadership and mentoring duties, this could be the right fit. You’ll work with cross-functional teams, sharing knowledge and guiding security decisions throughout the system lifecycle as you help raise cyber security capability across the program.

Guarding the SouthPAN backbone

In this role you’ll translate cyber security requirements into practical engineering work that spans the system’s lifecycle, from initial concepts through to deployment and operation. You’ll review designs and architectural changes to understand how security is affected and to ensure compliance. You’ll conduct threat modelling, threat hunting and vulnerability assessments to surface and mitigate risks, while supporting the development and verification of security controls and risk treatments. You’ll bring technical cyber security expertise to engineering, architecture, operations and program stakeholders, helping troubleshoot issues and guide security decisions. You’ll apply Defence and Australian Government cyber security frameworks, standards and policies to architectures and solutions, and you’ll contribute to security assurance, accreditation and risk reporting while mentoring teams and promoting security best practices across the program.

Working alongside cross-functional teams, you’ll take ownership of security outcomes and coordinate activities that raise the program’s cyber security capability. The SouthPAN program’s scope means you’ll have a chance to influence design choices early on, then validate and verify those decisions as the system matures and operates in real-world environments.

Your cyber toolkit for securing SouthPAN

Here’s what the role expects you to bring to the table, and what would help you hit the ground running.

  • Significant experience as a systems security engineer in Defence or other complex ICT environments
  • Solid knowledge of Defence cyber security frameworks, including DCSAAF, ISM, PSPF, DSPF and SPARTA
  • Proven track record in security architecture, security requirements analysis, assurance, accreditation and risk management
  • Hands-on Linux administration, VMware environments, system hardening and ongoing platform sustainment
  • Experience with Elastic Security and SIEM technologies for security event monitoring and incident response
  • Strong understanding of network architecture, identity and access management, ASD-approved cryptographic requirements and secure system design
  • Demonstrated capability in vulnerability management, threat analysis and developing effective remediation strategies
  • Proficiency in AI prompting as it applies to this position and practice

Don’t meet every requirement? If you’re excited by this opportunity but don’t satisfy every criterion, your skills may still be a great fit for this role, or another opportunity within Lockheed Martin Australia.

  • Experience working on satellite navigation programs or SBAS environments adds useful context to the role
  • Leadership or mentoring experience across technical teams is beneficial
  • Ability to drive cyber security capability across a program and coordinate with diverse stakeholders
  • Capacity to translate cyber security requirements into practical design decisions across the lifecycle

Advice for applicants

Lead with your citizenship status and your eligibility to obtain and maintain an Australian Defence security clearance at the level required for the position. Put that information at the very top of your résumé so a recruiter can confirm you meet the baseline security criteria early.

Show concrete examples that prove you meet the must-have skills, not just the titles. Describe a security architecture project you led or contributed to in a Defence or similarly complex ICT setting, the risk you managed, and the controls you implemented or validated, with measurable outcomes where possible.

Be ready to talk about how you’ve applied frameworks like DCSAAF, ISM, PSPF, DSPF and SPARTA to real systems. Prepare to discuss Linux, VMware, SIEM and incident response experiences, plus how you’ve mentored colleagues and promoted secure practices in a cross-functional environment.

Ask a targeted question about the program’s governance and risk management: for example, how security ownership is shared across engineering, operations and program management, and what metrics or milestones the team uses to track ongoing cyber security capability across the SouthPAN program.
