Amazon, through its AWS Professional Services team, is looking for a Delivery Consultant, Mainframe Modernisation to help enterprise customers migrate and modernise their legacy mainframes on AWS. The role is based onsite in Sydney, Australia, and is a full-time position. It’s ideal for someone who loves turning complex systems into cloud-ready solutions while guiding customers and partners toward measurable outcomes.

You’ll blend deep mainframe know-how with AWS know-how to craft practical modernization paths. Expect to work with platforms like z/OS, COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2 and IMS, and translate them into replatformed, refactored, or automated-transformation approaches on AWS. You’ll assess existing estates, map dependencies, propose migration waves, and help customers reduce technical debt while speeding up innovation on the cloud. You’ll also discuss AI-assisted code transformation and other modernisation patterns as part of shaping the journey, with delivery accountability from start to finish.

As part of the AWS Professional Services organisation, the team operates globally and collaborates with customer groups and the AWS Partner Network to realise enterprise cloud objectives. The environment includes knowledge sharing through playbooks, reference architectures, and assessment frameworks, all aimed at helping customers deploy, operate, and optimise on AWS.

A typical day steering mainframe modernisation on AWS

On a daily basis you’ll steer the initial assessment and discovery of customer mainframe estates, mapping out the application portfolio, dependencies and readiness for modernization. You’ll design and implement modernization solutions on AWS, choosing between replatforming, refactoring to cloud-native services, and automated code transformation, and you’ll guide the delivery with deep expertise in mainframe technologies and their AWS equivalents. Collaboration is key as you work with customer architects, development teams and business stakeholders to set migration waves, prioritise workloads, and manage cutover risk. You’ll also share insights on trends like AI-assisted code transformation and testing strategies, and you’ll contribute to reusable artefacts such as playbooks and reference architectures for future projects.

Beyond delivery, you’ll act as a trusted advisor on mainframe modernisation patterns and help customers adopt incremental migration approaches. You’ll ensure best practices are followed, optimise performance where possible, and help customer teams become self-sufficient after migration, all while maintaining conversation around risk, governance and measurable outcomes.

What you’ll bring to the table

To be considered, the team looks for a combination of formal experience and practical know-how. Here’s what’s essential:

  • Five-plus years working with enterprise modernization and migration technologies, including mainframe, serverless, containers, or cloud-ops.
  • Seven-plus years of hands-on experience with mainframe platforms such as z/OS, COBOL, PL/I, JCL, CICS, IMS, DB2 and VSAM.
  • Three-plus years with AWS or a comparable cloud platform, especially migration-related services like AWS Mainframe Modernisation, DMS, SCT, Step Functions and Lambda.
  • Experience applying mainframe modernization patterns, whether replatforming with tools like Micro Focus or Rocket, refactoring to cloud-native, or automated code transformation.
  • Experience migrating mainframe data stores (DB2, IMS, VSAM) to cloud-native databases (RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB).

In addition, the following would be valuable but aren’t required:

  • Seven-plus years working with mainframe and legacy systems.
  • Five-plus years leading or delivering modernization, legacy migration, or large-scale platform transformation programs.
  • Three-plus years using AWS services relevant to migration and modernization.
  • Experience migrating mainframe data stores to cloud-native databases or data lakes.
  • Five-plus years of external, customer-facing consulting or delivery on complex, multi-stakeholder transformations.
  • Experience with application portfolio assessment, dependency mapping and determining migration dispositions (rehost, refactor, replatform).
  • Exposure to AI-assisted code analysis, code transformation, or generative AI tools for understanding legacy code.

Pay, benefits and practical details

The role is full-time and onsite, based in Sydney, Australia.

Three practical tips for this mainframe journey

Put your five-plus years of enterprise modernization and migration experience up front in your resume, and clearly call out the stacks you’ve worked with, mainframe, serverless, containers, and cloud operations, so the team can see you match the must-haves quickly.

Be specific about your seven-plus years with mainframe technologies (z/OS, COBOL, JCL, CICS, IMS, DB2, VSAM) and illustrate how you’ve applied that knowledge to concrete AWS migration projects, including any results or outcomes.

Walk through any AI-assisted code transformation work you’ve done. If you’ve used tools for automated code analysis or generation, share concrete examples of how those tools helped you understand legacy code and accelerate modernization efforts.

Describe at least one external, customer-facing modernization effort you led or delivered, detailing how you scoped workloads, mapped dependencies and decided among rehost, replatform or refactor to reach outcomes with multiple stakeholders.
