Waimakariri District Council is establishing a dedicated Duty Planning Team to support growing demand, enhance customer service, and strengthen the delivery of planning advice across the district. We are seeking a Duty Planning Supervisor to lead this new team, help shape its future direction, and drive consistent, high-quality service delivery.
This newly established leadership opportunity will see you coordinating the delivery of planning advice and mentoring Duty Planners to ensure timely, accurate, and customer-focused outcomes. Working within our Resource Consents Team, you will play a key role in supporting the effective administration of the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA), while contributing to sustainable growth, environmental stewardship, and positive customer experiences across the Waimakariri District.
About the Role
Reporting to the Resource Consents Team Leader, you will oversee the day-to-day operation of the Duty Planning service, ensuring public enquiries, pre-application meetings, PIM reviews, vehicle crossing permits, and planning advice are delivered efficiently and professionally.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee and coordinate the Duty Planning function, ensuring timely responses to enquiries and applications
Provide specialist planning advice and support pre-application meetings
Process resource consents and planning approvals, in accordance with legislation
Maintain accurate records to support planning processes
Offer leadership, guidance and assistance to the wider team as needed, contributing to overall service quality
About You
To be successful in this role, you'll bring:
A people-focused professional with strong interpersonal skills, able to build positive relationships and communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including applicants, consultants, colleagues, and members of the public.
A recognised qualification in Planning, Resource Management, Surveying, or a related field
Approximately 4–5 years' experience as a Duty Planner and processing resource consent applications
Up-to-date knowledge of the Resource Management Act 1991 and related planning legislation
A proactive leader with strong organisational and time management skills
Someone who thrives in a collaborative and supportive environment
A keen eye for detail, effective communication, and process improvement
Ability to foster a positive and efficient work culture
