Elk Valley Resources (EVR) operates four steelmaking coal mines in the Elk Valley of British Columbia, employing more than 5,000 people. As part of the Glencore Group, EVR focuses on responsible resource development, strong environmental performance and productive partnerships with communities and Indigenous Peoples. In Elkford, BC, EVR is hiring an Engineer-in-Training for the Short Range Planning team to embark on a four-year program that blends hands-on field work with structured development.
The role sits on a path designed to mold a well-rounded professional engineer through rotations roughly every 18 to 24 months. You’ll report to the Senior Engineering Supervisor, Short Range Planning, and you’ll help ensure the engineering department has accurate as-built data for planning while operations run a solid, well-controlled mine plan. If you’re someone who enjoys collaboration across mine-site departments and can adapt to evolving needs in a mining environment, this could be a great fit.
Working at the Elk Valley site means you’ll be in a location that offers outdoor activities and a chance to balance work with a real sense of place. EVR emphasises employee development and communities, and you’ll join a team that values safety, teamwork and continuous improvement as part of everyday operations.
What you’ll do day to day
In this role, you’ll provide daily survey support to both Engineering and Operations teams, helping ensure data accuracy and accessibility for planning and execution. You’ll also contribute to month-end and quarter-end surveys, including volume calculations, and participate in project work that backs the Engineering group. Alongside data tasks, you’ll manage file handling for mobile field systems and contribute to broader mining planning efforts, including pit and dump design and drill and blast support, as part of a broader effort to improve existing systems and integrate new ones. You’ll be expected to engage with a range of mine-site stakeholders, maintain safety and environmental commitments, and apply a practical understanding of open-pit mining as you assist with short/mid/long-range planning activities. The role is designed to give you exposure to multiple facets of mining engineering, with rotations that broaden your experience and prepare you for a long career in the field. The basics you’ll bring
The following essentials will help you succeed in this program, and a few additional capabilities would make you stand out:- A bachelor’s degree in Mining, Geological Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent mix of education and hands-on experience
- Eligible for registration with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC), with EVR prepared to support eligible employees through the registration process
- Strong digital literacy with mining-oriented software and data systems
- At least one year of experience in an industrial setting; prior open-pit mining and truck-and-shovel exposure is a plus
- A valid Class 5 Driver’s License or an equivalent license
- Adaptability to shifting roles within a mining environment
- Solid interpersonal and communication skills to work with cross-disciplinary teams
- A positive, motivated mindset with a practical approach to prioritization
- Willingness to participate in future EIT rotations to broaden experience across mining activities
