You’ll work with both hourly and management staff, plus Occupational Health and Safety Committees, to support safe operations. The position includes helping to optimize the industrial hygiene program through ergonomic evaluations, inventory tracking, and surveys, while collecting occupational hygiene samples such as noise, particulates and other airborne contaminants. You’ll support the hearing conservation program, chemical management plan, and respiratory protection program; you’ll help with contractor pre-clearance and access systems; you’ll help facilitate safety training for employees, and you’ll have opportunities to propose ideas and technologies that could improve how the business runs. The experience comes with mentorship from seasoned specialists who understand the day-to-day realities of mining safety and health programs.

  • Comfort with outdoor work and the ability to drive vehicles at the operations in varying weather and terrain
  • Strong written and verbal communication, plus the ability to explain complex ideas to people at different levels
  • Solid computer skills with the ability to track and analyze data and keep project timelines on track

Advice for applicants

Lead your resume with the degree you’re pursuing in Occupational Hygiene or a related field, and highlight any co-op or internship work that involved hearing conservation, respiratory protection, or chemical management. If you have started ergonomic evaluations or conducted surveys as part of course projects, put those upfront and quantify the impact where possible to show your practical experience.

Describe concrete examples that demonstrate your must-have skills, such as how you communicated technical information to non-technical teammates, or how you managed multiple tasks with limited supervision while meeting deadlines. If you’ve used MS Word and Excel for data tracking or project timelines, provide a brief result or chart you created to illustrate your ability to manage data effectively.

Prepare to discuss your experience or coursework related to noise measurements, particulates sampling, and other airborne contaminants, even if it’s from a class project or a lab. Be ready to talk about how you would approach ergonomic evaluations or safety training in a mining environment, and share a specific idea you’d like to test in the field.

When you ask questions in the interview, consider focusing on mentorship structure and how a co-op integrates with ongoing programs like hearing conservation or chemical management, and what a successful first 90 days would look like. A smart question to ask: how does the team measure the impact of co-op contributions to the overall hazard assessment program?
