Engineering - Flight Software Engineer
AversanAversan, a trusted multi-service engineering and electronics manufacturing company, delivers leading-edge and reliable safety-critical electronics and software systems to the aerospace, defence, and space industries. They’re looking for a Senior Flight Software Engineer to steer the design of real-time embedded software for flight-critical systems, while mentoring less-experienced engineers and helping shape the team’s technical direction. The role sits in Brampton with a hybrid work setup, and it’s a good match for someone who enjoys delivering high-quality engineering solutions in a collaborative, safety-focused environment.
The person in this job will own the end-to-end development of safety-critical, real-time flight software. You’ll drive architectural decisions, define and document designs, and guide subsystem work so outcomes are modular, testable, and efficient. You’ll oversee code and design reviews to keep reliability and standards intact, and you’ll coach junior engineers by sharing trade-offs and approaches. You’ll help estimate efforts, contribute to project planning, and work with senior engineers and management to tighten coding standards, tools, and processes. Automated testing will be a key part of validating performance and reliability in real-time contexts, with ongoing support for integration, debugging, and continuous improvement across the lifecycle.
Daily flight software work in a trusted aerospace partner
You’ll lead the design, development, implementation, and testing of safety-critical, real-time embedded flight software, delivering modular and efficient solutions that stand up to scrutiny. You’ll articulate complex architectures so the team can align on decisions and you’ll steer subsystem design to ensure the software is scalable and robust. You’ll keep quality up through design and code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and help shape estimates and plans while collaborating with senior staff to strengthen development tools and engineering processes. Expect to work on validating software through automated tests and to troubleshoot and drive improvements across the software development lifecycle.
What you’ll need to bring
- A bachelor’s degree in software engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field
- At least ten years building embedded software applications
- Five or more years of hands-on work with VxWorks (Wind River)
- Strong C++ skills and a track record in developing real-time embedded applications
- Proven ability to design and implement safety-critical, real-time software solutions
- Experience with systems-on-chip (SoCs)
- Experience creating and running automated software tests and verification
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities
- Strong written and verbal communication and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams
- Proven technical leadership, including leading design reviews, technical decision-making, and mentoring of junior team members
- High motivation, initiative, and a commitment to delivering high-quality engineering solutions
- Ability to obtain and maintain Reliability Status security clearance and meet Controlled Goods Program (CGP) security assessment requirements, with eligibility for higher-level clearances as needed
The posting does not list any additional nice-to-haves beyond the above.
Compensation, location and security
Compensation ranges from CAD 112,000 to CAD 140,000 per year. The final salary is determined by factors such as geographic location, skills, competencies, and unique qualifications to ensure fair alignment with the role’s requirements.
The position is based in Brampton and offers a hybrid working arrangement. The listing notes this is an existing vacancy and mentions a blended in-person/remote setup.
In the hiring process, AI tools are used to assist with application management, but final hiring decisions remain with the human team and recruitment professionals. AI is guided by security and privacy risk assessments aligned with the company’s cybersecurity framework.
In addition, the role requires the ability to obtain and maintain Reliability Status security clearance and to meet CGP security assessment requirements, with eligibility to pursue higher-level clearances if needed.
Guidance for applicants
Lead with your embedded software chops. Put your 10+ years of embedded experience and your VxWorks/C++ work at the top of your resume, and show case studies where you built real-time safety-critical software.
Prove you can deliver. Include concrete examples of safety-critical software you designed and implemented, highlight any SoC work, and note how you set up automated tests to verify performance and reliability in real-time environments.
Be ready to discuss design decisions and leadership. Expect questions about trade-offs you faced, how you mentored junior engineers, and how you helped enforce coding standards and improve development tools and processes.
Ask a precise question. Consider asking how the team integrates CGP security requirements into the software lifecycle and how clearance status is managed within project work.
