Murphy is recruiting for an Environmental Manager to oversee environmental and sustainability work on multiple energy projects across the North East and Yorkshire. This is a full-time, onsite position based in Leeds, ENG, designed for someone who wants hands-on responsibility on site and across projects. The company is known for its in-house expertise and steady drive to innovate, delivering design, construction and commissioning for EPC projects across regulated and private customers, with a focus on the energy transition across several markets.

Across four countries, Murphy supports groundbreaking transmission and distribution work that helps secure energy for decades to come. The Environmental Manager will join a team that values practical environmental risk management and sustainable solutions, working with a wide range of stakeholders to keep projects compliant and progressing smoothly.

If you’re after a role where you can lead environmental standards on busy construction sites and help shape campaigns that minimise impact while driving performance, this could be the fit you’ve been seeking.

A day on site with Murphy

The role centers on providing leadership in environmental and sustainability practices, working closely with the SHESQ function to set the standard for how projects manage environmental duties from the ground up. You’ll ensure everyone on site understands their statutory responsibilities and know where to turn for guidance when questions arise, while partnering with site management teams to keep activities aligned with environmental and sustainability plans.

When incidents occur, you’ll lead investigations in line with company procedures, analysing data to pinpoint root causes and recommending changes to prevent repetition. You’ll collect environmental statistics, review trends, and use that insight to drive improvements across contracts and yards, shaping campaigns and improvement plans with operations leadership. You’ll also manage the preparation and review of environmental documents, including those from third parties, and produce or check plans, procedures and related documents for compliance.

Identifying significant environmental and sustainability issues is part of the job, with a focus on setting up appropriate controls in contracts and yard operations. You’ll oversee consents, licences and permits as required, ensuring they’re obtained and kept up to date. The role also involves providing reports and presentations to the business and SHESQ function, and contributing to pre-qualification, tender and environmental and sustainability award submissions as needed.

Must-have requirements

Murphy is looking for a candidate who can demonstrate chartered IEMA credentials and a solid track record applying environmental risk management on major construction projects. They should be able to discuss practical approaches to waste and water management, pollution prevention, nuisance issues, contaminated land and ecological mitigation, along with experience handling consents, licensing and DCO processes and a focus on Biodiversity Net Gain. A strong grasp of Net Zero principles is essential, as is experience in carbon measurement and driving efficiency improvements. Finally, proven ability to manage environmental incident investigations is important.

Tips to help you shine

Lead with your IEMA credential and a concrete example of environmental leadership on a major construction project, ideally showing how you worked with site teams to implement plans and reduce risk.

Show evidence of how you measure and report carbon or Net Zero progress, including any quantified reductions you’ve achieved and how you tracked progress over time. If you have Biodiversity Net Gain or DCO experience, highlight how you integrated those requirements into project planning and delivery.

Prepare a few STAR stories around incident investigations you’ve led, the data you analysed, and the changes you implemented to prevent recurrences, be ready to walk through the outcomes and the impact on project performance.

Think of a thoughtful, concrete question to ask about this role, such as how Murphy measures environmental performance across their North East and Yorkshire projects, what the immediate priorities are for the Environmental Manager in the first six months, and how the on-site team collaborates with the SHESQ function and Operations Director.
