Canadian Natural Resources is seeking an Environmental Student for an eight‑month term starting May 2027, based at Fort McMurray’s Albian or Horizon Oil Sands Site. You will assist amphibian, fisheries and wildlife monitoring, conduct field work, and prepare reports while tracking data and supporting regulatory submissions. You’ll collaborate with Environmental Specialists and Regulators on site inspections and wildlife management. Ideal candidates are in the 3rd or 4th year of Biology, Natural Science, or Environmental programs, hold a valid Class 5 license with a clean record, and have ATV or watercraft experience; prior oil sands or environmental work is a plus. As the successful candidate, you will work directly with the Aquatics Coordinator, assisting with amphibian, fisheries and wildlife monitoring, including conducting extensive field work and the creation of reports. In addition, you will identify, manage and track terrestrial wildlife to contribute to the success of the wildlife management system.

  • Job location: Fort McMurray, AB – Albian or Horizon Oil Sands Site
  • Shift schedules: 4 days on, 3 days off, 10 hours/day (Monday – Thursday) or 8 days on, 6 days off, 10 hours/day (Wednesday – Wednesday) 
  • Term length: 8 months
  • Term start: May 2027
  • Safety sensitive position: Yes

Key Accountabilities:

  • Assist with amphibian, fisheries and wildlife monitoring including conducting extensive field work and the creation of reports
  • Track and record all field and laboratory data 
  • Contribute to surface water quality monitoring as required
  • Identify, manage and track terrestrial wildlife to contribute to the success of the wildlife management system
  • Assist with wildlife regulatory reporting requirements
  • Collaborate with Environmental Specialists, Regulatory Coordinators, and Academic Researchers during their site work
  • Generate supporting data and forms for regulatory application submissions
  • Support the inspection of project facilities for environmental compliance tracking

What You Bring to The Role:

  • Currently enrolled in your 3rd, or 4th year of a Biology, Natural Science, or Environmental program
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean drivers abstract
  • Previous ATV and/or watercraft experience considered an asset
  • Previous environmental or oil sands experience considered an asset
