Position Overview

Texas Materials is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Field Mechanic to inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy equipment used in aggregate, asphalt, construction, and paving operations. The Field Mechanic will travel to various job sites and facilities to perform preventative maintenance and emergency repairs, ensuring equipment remains safe, reliable, and operational.

The ideal candidate will have experience working on diesel-powered construction equipment, strong troubleshooting skills, and a commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical issues on heavy construction equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment including excavators, loaders, skid steers, dozers, crushers, conveyors, and asphalt paving equipment.
  • Conduct inspections and identify equipment deficiencies before failures occur.
  • Repair and replace engines, transmissions, hydraulic components, braking systems, and other major equipment systems.
  • Perform welding, cutting, fabrication, and minor machining repairs as needed.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns in the field to minimize downtime and support production schedules.
  • Complete service reports, inspection records, work orders, and maintenance documentation accurately and timely.
  • Maintain clean and organized service vehicles, tools, and work areas.
  • Utilize diagnostic software and equipment to identify mechanical and electrical issues.
  • Follow all company, DOT, OSHA, and MSHA safety regulations and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, equipment operators, and maintenance personnel regarding equipment status and repair needs.
  • Participate in after-hours and weekend emergency repair work when required.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience repairing heavy construction, aggregate, mining, or paving equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and powertrain components.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, schematics, and hydraulic diagrams.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Basic computer skills for maintenance reporting and diagnostics.

Preferred

  • Technical school certification in diesel technology or heavy equipment maintenance.
  • CDL (Commercial Driver's License).
  • ASE, CAT, Cummins, John Deere, or other equipment manufacturer certifications.
  • Experience working with aggregate, asphalt, crushing, or paving operations.
  • Welding and fabrication experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds; occasionally up to 75 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
  • Work in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and dusty environments.
  • Ability to climb on and around heavy equipment safely.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
