BASF is seeking a Junior Controller (m/f/d) in its Global Business Services network in Berlin. The role is full-time and based onsite, with a hybrid option for the right candidate in Germany. It’s a solid fit if you’re starting out in finance and enjoy turning data into actionable insights while collaborating with different parts of the business. The company’s service hub in Berlin combines finance, HR, supply chain, procurement, product safety and IT to deliver digital, customer-focused solutions across Europe.

As a member of BASF Services Europe GmbH, you’ll contribute to a team that supports BASF’s divisions with cross-functional expertise and a focus on accuracy and continuous improvement. This position offers a path to grow in areas like cost center accounting, cost charging, product costing and project accounting, all within a company that aims to make processes smarter and more automated over time. If you’re eager to learn, work with SAP data, and help create clearer financial stories for decision-makers, this could be a great match.

People who would enjoy this role are those who like working with numbers, value teamwork, and want to help harmonize and automate financial reporting across functions. It’s a good fit for someone early in their career who wants hands-on experience in management accounting and the chance to contribute to internal and global projects while developing a strong skill set in digitalizing processes.

A day in the life in the junior controller chair

You’ll work with SAP data to ensure accuracy and support month-end closings, turning data into clear financial insights that inform decisions. You’ll partner with controlling units to develop solutions that support strategic choices and help keep cost accounting, cost charging, product costing, and project accounting on track. You’ll also explore opportunities to improve processes, reports and systems, pushing for harmonization and automation where it makes sense and helping to drive efficiency across projects and areas of responsibility.

In practice, that means collaborating across teams to keep the numbers honest, contributing to defined areas of competence, and supporting internal and global projects with your growing expertise. You’ll be expected to identify where the reporting can be clearer or more automated and to lend your analysis to ongoing efforts that make the business more agile and transparent.

Foundations you’ll bring

  • You’ve completed studies in business or economics or can demonstrate a strong willingness to learn and grow.
  • You have some early exposure to accounting or controlling, such as internships or related roles.
  • You bring a solid IT mindset and an interest in digitalization; experience with SAP R/3 FI/CO or SAP S/4HANA is an advantage.
  • You communicate effectively in English, with additional European languages seen as a plus.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with SAP S/4HANA or other SAP modules beyond the basics in FI/CO.
  • Prior work in a multinational environment with exposure to management accounting or cross-border projects.

Pay, benefits and the practical bits

The gross annual salary for this full-time role ranges from 40.000 to 46.000 €, depending on qualifications and professional experience, plus a company-success-based bonus.

You’ll enjoy 30 days of paid vacation, with special leave and sabbatical options available. Flexible working hours help you balance work with your personal life, and there are location-independent work models with defined days of presence in Berlin and residence in Germany. You can also work from other EU countries for up to six weeks.

Advice for applicants

Lead your resume with the accounting or controlling work you’ve done and any SAP experience you’ve had, so the hiring team sees you’ve got what this role needs from the start.

When you describe must-have skills, back them up with concrete examples from internships or projects, show how you handled tasks like month-end closings, cost center activities, or cost charging and what outcomes you delivered.

Be ready to discuss how you’ve partnered with controlling teams to solve problems or improve processes, and be prepared to explain any automation or reporting improvements you’ve helped implement or prototype.

Ask a targeted question in your interview about how the team collaborates with global projects on product costing and cost allocation, or how they pursue harmonization across regions, this shows you’re thinking about the bigger picture and how you’d fit into the team.
