Smiths Detection, the security screening arm of Smiths Group, is recruiting a Junior Sales Manager to help grow its footprint in the Middle East. The role is based in Dubai, onsite, and runs on a two-year contract. It’s a great fit for someone who likes selling advanced technology and enjoys shaping a territory by building relationships with customers in complex environments.

Smiths Detection operates globally with 21 offices, seven manufacturing sites and five R&D centres, supported by about 3,000 colleagues. As part of a world leader in threat detection and screening solutions, you’ll work on state-of-the-art systems for customers in aviation, ports and borders, defence and urban security, with opportunities to grow your career locally and across the group.

The Junior Sales Manager is an individual contributor who will own the sales responsibilities for defined market verticals and carry out the full sales process, reporting into the Senior Sales Manager. The position is tailored for someone who wants to drive new business and deepen relationships while collaborating across departments to deliver profitable projects.

What you’ll do day to day

Your days will revolve around managing a hands-on sales cycle for a defined market, from planning and market listening to closing deals and keeping accurate records. You’ll develop an annual sales plan that blends qualitative insight with measurable targets and you’ll keep it updated as opportunities evolve. You’ll stay attuned to market drivers and bring strategic input to budgeting discussions, while ensuring the sales data you report in SAP is timely and precise. You’ll push for new customer acquisition while safeguarding customer satisfaction and retention, and you’ll coordinate with colleagues across the organization to keep opportunities moving smoothly. In practice, you’ll prospect for new customers, nurture relationships, arrange product demonstrations, participate in trade shows, prepare quotations and contribute to major proposals. You’ll also take part in product and sales training and attend internal meetings, all while complying with health, safety, environmental, export and compliance requirements. Some tasks may be assigned by the Senior Sales Manager as needed.

A candid guide for applicants

Put your two to five years of relevant sales experience front and center in your résumé, especially any proof you’ve sold high-value technology solutions to customers in aviation, ports and borders, urban security or defence. If you’ve built or managed a sales plan for a market vertical, include numbers or outcomes that demonstrate the impact you had on growth and profitability.

When you describe your must-have skills, back them up with concrete examples, show how you’ve established lasting relationships with customers, partners or prospects, and a scenario where you pitched a security solution to a large audience. If you’re comfortable, mention any Arabic language work or interactions you’ve had with Arabic-speaking clients to illustrate your communication strength in relevant contexts.

Prepare for interviews by sharing a real instance where you created a sales plan, worked with a programs or delivery team, and used data to drive decisions. Be ready to discuss how you would coordinate across departments to deliver a profitable project, and how you handle reporting in SAP to ensure accuracy and timely updates.

Finally, have a smart question ready about how quotas and territory plans are set, how the annual budget for the vertical is determined, and how cross-functional teams support sales cycles, these tie directly to the role’s responsibilities and will show you’re thinking about how to succeed in this environment.
