If you’re the kind of technician who thrives on keeping complex equipment up and running, enjoys a bit of travel, and takes pride in accurate documentation, you’ll likely feel at home here. The role blends hands-on maintenance, diagnostics, and calibration with the chance to contribute to a larger mission of safer, cleaner travel for the public.

The day-to-day you’ll own

In this role, you’ll perform routine maintenance, diagnose issues, and calibrate emission-related gear and lane systems to ensure high performance and uptime. You’ll also install and test equipment, confirming it functions as intended, and you’ll lend a hand with electrical and electronic systems in the field, such as alarms and network interfaces. A steady part of your week will be following established procedures for scheduled maintenance and maintaining clear, thorough service records and documentation.

Part of your routine will involve traveling to various station locations as needed, with driving comprising up to about a third of your time. You’ll also take on additional duties and projects as assigned, so you’ll need to stay flexible and ready to adapt to changing priorities while keeping safety and quality front and center.

Your must-haves

To be considered, you should bring these core capabilities:

  • Hands-on experience with testing tools and instruments, including digital voltmeters and similar devices.
  • Familiarity with mechanical and electrical tools used in diagnostics and repair.
  • Comfort with frequent physical activity, including bending, lifting, climbing, pushing and pulling up to half the time.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds from ground level to chest height.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, plus a strong customer-service mindset.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Nice-to-haves

These qualities aren’t required but can help you stand out:

  • Previous supervisory experience, which is strongly preferred but not essential.

Pay, benefits and practical details

Work is on site in Owings Mills, MD, and the role is full-time and non-exempt. You should be prepared for flexible hours and overtime when needed, and you must be willing to travel to station locations across the state. A valid driver’s license with a good driving record is required, and the role entails driving up to 30% of the time. The physical demands include frequent bending, lifting, climbing, pushing and pulling up to 50% of the time, with the ability to lift 75 pounds from the ground to chest level.

Advice for applicants

Lead with your hands-on maintenance experience, especially any time you spent servicing emission-related equipment, performing diagnostics, or calibrations. Put upfront in your resume how you’ve kept equipment at peak performance and how you’ve solved issues in field settings.

When you describe your must-have skills, call out concrete evidence: hands-on work with testing devices like digital voltmeters, use of mechanical and electrical tools, and examples of independent work where you kept service records accurate and on time. If you can, quantify the scope of tasks you handled and the outcomes you achieved.

For the interview, prepare stories about calibrating and installing equipment, handling alarms or network-system tasks, and the steps you take to ensure accurate documentation. Be ready to discuss times you worked flexible hours or overtime, and how you balanced speed with quality when servicing stations on the road.

Finally, consider a thoughtful question you can ask the team, such as how travel is scheduled across the state, what a typical week looks like when you’re servicing multiple stations, or what kinds of emission equipment you’ll be most frequently maintaining. You could also ask about how success is measured in this role, for example whether uptime or service-record accuracy is a primary performance driver.
