Nurse Apprentice - E50 Internal Medicine
University of Utah HealthUniversity of Utah Health is hiring a Nurse Apprentice to join the E50 Internal Medicine team in Salt Lake City, Utah. This part‑time, onsite role sits within a system that operates as a Level 1 Trauma Center and is nationally recognized for research, quality standards and patient experience. The organization runs five hospitals and eleven clinics, and the team looks for people who value patient care, teamwork and professional growth. The path ahead includes earning nursing credentials and, eventually, advancing to a Clinical Nurse position upon licensure.
As a Nurse Apprentice, you’ll deliver hands-on patient care under the guidance of a registered nurse, with direct contact with patients and their families and support for the broader care environment. The long view is clear: after you pass nursing board exams and are licensed as a Registered Nurse in Utah, you’d apply for a Clinical Nurse role to move up in the hospital’s clinical ladder.
In short, this is a chance to start in a structured learning role that blends bedside care with the responsibilities of a hospital team, in a setting that encourages ongoing education and professional progression within a large health system.
A day on the E50 Internal Medicine floor
Under the supervision of a registered nurse, you’ll help assess patients, plan and implement care, and re‑evaluate interventions as conditions change. You’ll contribute to care plans for individual patients, seeking oversight from your supervising nurse and ensuring the nursing process is documented in the patient’s record. You’ll also assist in educating patients and families about post‑discharge care programs, following the guidance of the supervising nurse, and you’ll stay current on advances in nursing care by taking part in educational programs.
Beyond direct care, you’ll support the broader care environment by helping with activities of daily living and indirect tasks that keep the unit safe and efficient. That includes things like companion care, chaperoning the physician during examinations, housekeeping, transporting supplies and patients, stocking materials, and performing maintenance tasks as needed. You’ll take on unit‑specific duties and accept delegated tasks appropriate to your training, playing an integral role on the health care team. Because patient needs can change, the department may require rotating schedules that include nights, weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 coverage, and reliable attendance is considered essential.

Lead your resume with the credentials that matter most here: your current Utah licensure track and your eCredential status. Make sure the RQI eCredential date and the license type are easy to spot at the top of the page, so the team can see you meet the immediate requirements.
Show what proves you can work in a 24/7 care setting. Include a concrete example of a time you supported patient education, assisted with ADLs, or helped maintain a safe and efficient care environment under supervision.
Prepare to talk through how you apply knowledge of lifespan development to patient assessments and how you communicate in a multi‑disciplinary team. Have a brief scenario ready that demonstrates effective communication with patients, families and colleagues.
Ask a thoughtful question about growth in the unit, such as how the internal medicine team supports new Nurse Apprentices on the path toward a Clinical Nurse role, and what supervision looks like day to day on the E50 floor.
