This role plays a key part in ensuring our cloud‑based services are resilient, secure, scalable, and ready to support the next phase of our transformation.
Mo te Tūranga | About the Role
This role leads a team of senior and intermediate cloud engineers focused on the operational support and continuous uplift of our AWS cloud hosting environments. Your team will own the engineering, automation, observability, and operational readiness of the TRasact platform — ensuring our services remain available, performant, and safe for our customers.
You’ll work closely with our infrastructure teams, cloud vendors, delivery squads, and partner platforms to ensure BNZ’s cloud-hosted core services are running smoothly and evolving with purpose.
We sat down with our Platform Manager, and they let us know the following about the role:
What will you do day to day?
Provide leadership, coaching and support across AWS Cloud engineering streams, driving high-quality engineering practices and continuous improvement.
Guide the delivery of Infrastructure‑as‑Code (IaC), automation patterns, and operational engineering improvements aligned to BNZ’s technology strategy.
Build a culture of accountability, collaboration, and innovation — supporting your people and enabling them to deliver high‑quality outcomes.
Maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, vendors, and Platform Managers to ensure clear prioritisation, communication, and a focus on customer outcomes.
Uplift the platform’s resilience, high availability, observability and automation to reduce manual effort, technical debt and operational risk.
What projects will you be involved in?
Supporting BNZ’s cloud transformation initiatives, ensuring our TRasact services and pipelines are stable, secure, and modernised as part of our evolving hybrid‑cloud ecosystem.
Leading cloud engineering uplift work across CI/CD, IaC, monitoring, alerting and environment automation to support the broader Core Transformation programme.
Ensuring seamless collaboration between project delivery and business‑as‑usual operations as we scale cloud‑based services and adopt new cloud-native patterns.
What’s exciting about this opportunity?
You’ll lead a team responsible for cloud platforms and services that underpin some of BNZ’s most critical customer-facing experiences.
You’ll help shape how BNZ evolves its cloud engineering practices — including IaC standards, automation frameworks, cloud operations, and resilience uplift.
You’ll influence how BNZ designs, runs, and sustains its core banking environments, playing a key role in our long-term core banking vision.
You’ll work alongside experienced engineers passionate about delivering high-quality, reliable services for millions of customer interactions every day.
What’s challenging about this opportunity?
You’ll lead a core operational cloud team at the centre of BNZ’s modernisation. This means:
Balancing cloud stability with innovation — keeping services reliable while continuously improving them.
Ensuring strong engineering discipline while evolving patterns, tools, and practices across IaC, automation and operational engineering.
Managing complex stakeholder relationships across delivery squads, vendors and technology platforms.
Keeping the team aligned and supported in a fast-paced, cloud-first engineering environment.
What attributes will help you succeed?
We’re looking for a proven leader with experience across operational and delivery-focused technology teams. You will bring:
A background in leading core banking platforms, infrastructure-as-code, and robust operational practices (preferably in AWS).
Strong understanding of engineering governance, risk, security and compliance in large regulated environments.
Excellent communication skills — able to translate technical cloud concepts into meaningful business outcomes.
A people-first leadership style with a passion for developing and empowering engineers.
Experience in agile delivery and continuous improvement methodologies.
