The Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines is hiring a Senior Market Risk Analyst to join its Des Moines team. The bank emphasizes building an inclusive culture that values a diverse workforce to better serve its members. This is a full-time, hybrid role that gives you the chance to work across a range of risk programs while staying connected to the local Des Moines scene.

The role centers on measuring market risk for the balance sheet, using sophisticated financial models, and running stress tests to understand potential exposures. You’ll also help with the Asset/Liability Management system, ensuring risk analytics stay aligned with the bank’s strategies and regulatory expectations.

It’s a good fit if you enjoy quantitative analysis, producing and explaining risk insights, and collaborating with committees and teams across the organization to improve governance and reporting processes.

The risk desk in Des Moines

On a typical day, you’ll keep the daily total balance sheet risk reporting running smoothly while building and reviewing monthly risk outputs such as Market Value of Equity, Market Value of Capital Stock, Economic Value of Capital Stock and Value at Risk. You’ll dig into why the monthly numbers move, offering attribution analysis that clarifies the drivers behind changes in MVE and VaR. Your analyses will feed into risk reports for the Market Risk Committee, the Enterprise Risk Committee, the Asset Liability Committee and the Valuation Subcommittee, helping leadership understand where risk lies and how it’s evolving.

Part of the work also involves assessing monthly valuation results for advances and running income simulations to gauge potential outcomes. You’ll monitor daily liquidity activities and review weekly market loading and MPF pricing update reports to keep ahead of shifts in the market environment. When opportunities arise to enhance reporting, you’ll identify improvements and implement optimized solutions, drawing on model changes and findings from FHFA exams, model validation, and other audits.

The role includes supporting bank-wide projects by testing risk report source data, assisting with compliance with internal controls and regulations, and keeping the risk management system, Polypaths, maintained and upgraded. You’ll contribute to a culture of careful risk management while handling other duties as assigned.

What you’ll bring to the role

The must-haves and nice-to-haves below are phrased as what you’ll need or have a good shot at bringing to the team.

  • An advanced degree in finance, financial engineering, economics, mathematics, statistics, an MBA or other quantitative/computing field, or equivalent work experience
  • At least two years of hands-on quantitative analysis experience in finance, economics, mathematics, statistics or another quantitative/computing field
  • Strong analytical ability and comfort with core office tools, including Access, Excel and Word, along with the capacity to communicate findings clearly
  • Programming experience such as SQL or VBA is a plus
  • Professional designations CFA or FRM are helpful

Advice for applicants

Lead with your quantitative credentials and the two years of hands-on analysis you bring, then weave in how you’ve used models to measure risk and explain responses to market shifts. In your resume, place the advanced degree or relevant equivalent experience up front so the hiring team sees your fit quickly.

Demonstrate you’ve worked with risk reporting concepts the job requires, such as MVE, MVCS, EVCS and VaR, and show how you’ve distilled complex attribution factors into clear findings that leadership can act on. If you’ve contributed to risk committee materials before, highlight those experiences and the impact of your analyses on decisions.

Prepare to discuss Polypaths and any ALM-related projects you’ve supported, including how you’ve helped test data sources or participate in model changes and responses to exam findings. Bring examples of well-documented analyses and any collaboration with internal controls or compliance teams.

Ask a strong, specific question about how the bank uses monthly risk reports with the Market Risk Committee, Enterprise Risk Committee, Asset Liability Committee and Valuation Subcommittee, and what governance changes or priorities are expected in the near term. This shows you’re thinking about how your work supports governance and strategic risk management.
