Full-time
On-site
Edmonton, CA
$61,000 - $84,000 CAD yearly

Bimbo Canada, part of the world’s largest baking company, is looking for a Specialist, Baking Technology to join an Edmonton site. The team covers a long slate of brands Canadians know well, from Dempster’s and Villaggio to Thomas’ and Vachon, among others, across 15 bakeries and about 4,000 associates nationwide. This role blends hands-on food science with cross-functional collaboration to keep production consistently high in quality and safety.

The position is onsite in Edmonton and is offered as a 12-month contract. You’ll work closely with the Manager, Baking Technology and partner with the plant teams, R&D, marketing, regulatory affairs, finance and purchasing to move innovation projects from idea to market. Travel to Ontario (Greater Toronto Area) may be required depending on project needs, and you should expect a schedule that can shift to align with bakery production, including some hours outside the standard workday to fit testing and launches.

If you like bridging science and manufacturing, coordinating across teams, and driving tangible results in a real-time production setting, this role could be a fit. The work demands strong technical know-how, clear communication and a hands-on approach to solving problems that arise on the line.

A day in the life on the baking technology front

Your days blend problem solving with project execution. You’ll help resolve issues in the baking process at the plants, then craft action plans to address root causes and prevent recurrences. In parallel, you’ll support the R&D team by running tests to refine recipes, evaluate new ingredients and consider launches of new products in the market. You’ll coordinate with plant management to track milestones for new product commercialization, cost reduction initiatives and potential reformulations, ensuring everyone follows the testing schedule and that results feed into formula and process adjustments as needed.

You’ll also lend a hand when plants face quality challenges, such as internal evaluations or consumer complaints, helping to drive corrective actions and prevent rejections. As a primary technical resource, you’ll support projects that modify manufacturing processes or equipment to safeguard product quality while keeping timelines intact. Training and coaching factory staff on ingredients, baking techniques, processes and equipment will be part of your remit, along with documenting product launches and maintaining internal specifications for recipes and manufacturing methods. After audits, you’ll help implement necessary changes with the R&D team and share concise plant visit summaries with management, highlighting follow-ups and accountability for deliverables.

Documentation and follow-through matter here. You’ll keep up with plant observations and ensure all mandates are completed, contributing to a culture focused on quality and continuous improvement across the network.

What you’ll need to bring and what’s nice to have

  • A university degree in Food Science and Technology, or an equivalent mix of education and relevant experience
  • Two to three years in a similar role, preferably within a food manufacturing setting
  • Strong computer skills across Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook
  • Evidence of leadership when working with multidisciplinary teams and a track record of delivering on commitments
  • Clear, precise verbal and written communication that explains project status and technical details to diverse audiences
  • Meticulous attention to detail with thorough follow-ups
  • A sense of urgency and a professional approach to across-the-board problem solving
  • A mindset that uses data and statistics to analyze issues and guide decisions
  • Being bilingual (French/English) is a useful asset
  • A background or interest in product launches, recipe optimization and process improvements in a plant setting
  • Experience coordinating testing with production schedules and management teams

Pay, benefits and practical details

The salary range listed for this role falls between $61,000 and $84,000 per year. This range excludes discretionary bonus compensation and the comprehensive benefits package. The final offer may vary based on location, experience, education and skill level.

The role is a 12-month contract based out of Edmonton and requires onsite attendance. Some travel to Ontario may be needed to support project launches, testing and collaboration with partner facilities. The work schedule is flexible to align with bakery production needs, and some testing may occur outside standard hours. Offers are contingent on the successful completion of a pre-hire background check, which may include checks of criminal history, references and, where appropriate, credit and/or physical-demands assessments. Advice for applicants tailored to this role

Lead with your degree and relevant experience. Put your university credential in Food Science and Technology, and clearly note any hands-on manufacturing work or equivalent training you’ve completed, especially if you’ve collaborated with R&D or plant teams on product launches.

Show how you prove you can move projects from concept to reality. Give concrete examples of when you partnered with multidisciplinary teams to hit testing schedules and deliver milestones on time, then explain how you helped adjust formulas or processes based on results.

Be ready to discuss a situation where you resolved a quality issue using data. Talk through a time you addressed a product complaint or audit finding, the corrective action you proposed, and how you verified the outcome across plants.

Ask a pointed question that reflects the role’s specifics. For example, inquire about how often travel to Ontario is needed, what success looks like for a 12-month project, and how the team measures impact of the baking-technology initiative on overall product quality and cost reductions.
